I suppose this is remotely related to widgets (most are free) so I post it here.

Does anybody know of any useful freeware? Or, otherwise free tweaks, tips, abilities for OS X? I'm new to mac so I'd appreciate knowing some things. Plus, this community seems young, tech-savvy, etc., so I am hoping many people know of some freeware...

Mail.appetizer

One of the most useful Mail freeware I have come across.

What it does:
Simply put, this thing notifies you of new mail. It brings up a semi-translucent box at a position you determine, size you determine, and contents you determine. Works with Mail.app. Fully customizable. (You can even set the transparency.) Free (not shareware, not demo). Visit the website if you want to see screenshots, which are quite cool.

It runs as part of Mail and can be customized through the preferences. With this I can keep Mail minimized and not only be notified of new mail, but read a select amount of the contents, know who it was from (and to which mailbox, if you like), open it in Mail, mark as read, etc. Pretty darn comprehensive, snazzy too.

Tinker Tool

A tweak tool for Mac OS X, which can allow you to manipulate simple things like system fonts, dock, scroll bar options, and some other things, all from one simple GUI.

Also includes reset features so you don't have to worry. Support for English, German, Finnish, French, Italian, Japanese, Swedish, Traditional Chinese. You can also disable Dashboard Sad .

(Screenshot, list of capabilities sorted by version of OS.)

There is also a demo of Tinker Tool System that can be launched 5 times before it loses its functionality. Tinker Tool System uses advanced tweaks, requiring technical support that costs money, hence it is not freeware. But I use it as freeware, because I don't plan on launching it again. Unless it launches itself or something.

I couldn't get center stage to work... Am I doing something wrong? It did say it was an alpha product, though.
