I am posting the following call for designs because it might interest some of the excellent widget designers who use this forum. This is info on a competition to design the official web clock for Malaysia, which will be very widget-like.



On the web at:

You are invited to create a new web clock for the people of Malaysia. A simple and intuitive animated web clock will provide the citizens of Malaysia with the Official current time, from the Malaysian Caesium atomic clock. You are invited to submit design prototypes for this clock, which would be animated, and made publicly available to the 24 million citizens of Malaysia, and web users worldwide.

The winning design will receive international exposure: The Malaysian government will feature and promote the web clock on its national web site, as a key public service, and it will be viewed daily by millions of people worldwide. To encourage the best quality designs, there is a cash prize for the top three winners. First place: $500 USD, Second place: $200 USD, and Third place: $100 USD.

Entrants are welcome to email any questions related to this contest by July 13, 2005.

The call is open to citizens of any country, and IDEA will make appropriate payment arrangement for non-US winners. Designers of all backgrounds are welcome, as are multiple submissions. Once submitted, submissions become property of the Malaysian government and IDEA, and IDEA reserves the right to modify or translate any design into Malay (Bahasa Melayu) or other languages.


The deadline for submissions is July 20, 2005.
A list of winners will be made public on August 5, 2005.


Design should be a PNG, TIF or JPG image, suitable for use in a small web widget, in English language. You are providing a mockup only, IDEA's programmers will animate it. The imagery should include a map of ASEAN countries, and be a single screen which shows the clock. Dimensions should be less than 500x500, and greater than 150x150 pixels. Opaque background suitable to be in a web browser. Submissions will be judged on several criteria, including overall appearance, usability, and Malaysian cultural appropriateness.


This contest and web clock project are led by the Institute for Dynamic Educational Advancement (IDEA). IDEA is a registered US nonprofit organization, based in Maryland, USA, committed to public service projects which inform and educate the public, using current technologies. IDEA works with leading museums, universities, and government agencies. IDEA originally created the Official US web clock, at, in collaboration with the National Institute for Standards and Technology and the US Naval Observatory, and is working with the SIRIM agengy of the Malaysian government to create the Malaysian clock.
