Does the back side HAVE to be used as preferences or info? Can it be used for just other parts of the widgets?

IMO...

Go ahead and be creative. You probably already know if what you do will make sense to users or confuse them. The Apple design guidelines are there to guide us away from confusion, If your widget idea does not have any "philisophical" or "paradigm confusion" conflict with the rest of the widget universe then I don't see a problem.

Apple has breached their own UI guidelines many times. For example, when iTunes was first released, it broke a few of Apple's own UI guidelines..(e.g. the resize button "windowshades" iTunes into a mini window rather than a window that fills the whole screen..) Now iTunes has become a sort of prototype for Apple, they broke the mold to move forward.. Anyone can come up with the next great idea for a widget and move us further forward. (obviously Apple has more weight to throw around, but no one can deny good ideas that work)

Hard to say. Sure, you can go ahead and make it for whatever you want, but I really suggest you just put preferences on the back- it won't be so confusing for the user if you just keep everything organized on one side. It also depends on the situation- would the backside have a similar use as the front, or would it be a totally different widget? If it's a similar use, you may just want to put it on the front and not have to go through the effort of making a back.[/list]
