I tend to miss the fact that I have new messages, would it be possible to make this a little more obvious. Maybe have the "you have 1 new message" be in a different color so that it stands out and catches you attention.

While I'm not responsible for developments like that to the site, you are also able to have an e-mail sent to you notifying you of a new private message. Just go into "Profile" and change "Notify on new Private Message:" to Yes. Just a thought.
