Date & Time - SwissRailwayClock

Description: Yes, just another clock, but one of the most well known Swiss Clock Designs featured at every Swiss Railway Station. With the famous seconds stop every minute - wait and think before you start into a new minute of your life. Here you find some information on the design of this clock (from the website www.hilfiker.org):

The best known clock in the world
Switzerland is world renowned for its punctuality, a reputation enhanced with the enduring image of the Swiss Railway Clock. The clock, prominently displayed in every railway station in Switzerland, can be found more than 3,000 times across the country. The simple and unique design is an international symbol for reliability and visitors learn quickly to depend on its easy-to-read face to ensure they make their train departure. Back in the 1940s when the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) was looking for a way to take advantage of their name for punctuality and incorporate this theme into their national image, they asked Hans Hilfiker, an SBB employee, engineer and prolific inventor, to come up with a highly visible clock that would not only form the basis of their later corporate identity, but it would help to guarantee on time departures as well. Hilfiker, an exponent of products that were both functional and well designed, created the Railways' masterpiece in 1944. The copyrighted design, with its clear and easily read face, mimics the smooth running of the trains and incorporates clever features that demonstrate punctuality in a highly visible fashion.

I notice much lower CPU usage here compared to the other analog clock widgets, including Apple's.

The lighting should be from the top, IMO not the top-left...

This is a way interesting clock design which I did not know about before now. It evokes an old school train signal and is "modern" at the same time. It must move a bit faster to compensate for the pause, so I wonder if that has the effect of making people tend to move faster than they would otherwise to help make their trains on time ?

Hi there, thanks for the inputs, I will take it serious and optimize the thing as soon as possible.

The pause of the second hand indeed "urges" people to be on their train before the actual time arrives. Maybe, the Swiss Railway Company is quite accurate with their schedules due to this clock design smiley

I notice that the CPU usage is the same whether Dashboard is active or not. Maybe you can check the World Clock widget to see how they manage to drop the CPU usage to none when Dashboard is hidden.

Re CPU usage, on my Dual 800 G4 with dashboard active, Swiss Railway Clock uses approx 6% and Apple World Clock 12%. With dashboard inactive, Swiss Railway Clock uses approx 5.3%, Apple World Clock 0%. Hopefully this can be fixed, so provisional five stars for this widget.

Version 1.1 still uses 5% - 6% CPU with dashboard inactive.

Oh yes, you are right, I am sorry. I tuned the overall usage a little bit down, but when inactive, it still uses CPU. Hm, I have to check that out ...

Thanks for the inputs. Now the thingy should be ok.

CPU issue fixed, at last. Swiss Railway Clock looks neat as a desktop floater (in developer mode).

Very cool... fascinating clock design. You ought to move the close X so it's closer to the clock itself though... Having it so far away makes it very difficult to close in certain situations. (Hold down option and try to click the X while it's overlapping another widget... it's nearly impossible.)

Your analog clock is amazing, done with Javascript and images, you got 5 stars from me in functionality, design and creativity.

I thought that would be much more difficult to create an analog clock like yours using JavaScript programming language, i thought it would need a lot more Javascript code but you done it with little code and effort perhaps.

Thanks for sharing, i will try to do my own clock based on your analog clock work and code.
