Multimedia - Capture

Description: A Screen Capture widget by Chris O'Brien, with graphics by Rick Patrick. Use Capture to take either a fullscreen, windowed or selection screenshot. Capture will convert your screenshot to a graphic format and size of your choice before saving. Users are given the choice of capturing the screen behind the dashboard, or 'as is', with the dashboard in the foreground.
Author: Chris
Version: 0.79
New in v0.79: Added in Swedish, Dutch and Norwegian localisations (thanks to Gabriel Lundmark, Tom Klaver and Jo Daniel Aleksandersen respectively).

It also now takes screenshots to file again - so sorry about the mix up. I mentioned the stuff in the comments below. If it doesn't work the first time round, delete its preferences (~/Library/Preferences/widget-com.blackbook.capture.plist). If it's still not working, please email me.

Cheers,

Chris

Chris, any idea when the prefs pane will show things again. They showed in earlier builds but not in the more recent releases of Tiger. Great widget though, I use it all the time.

Oh, yes. Sorry - I got it all working a while back. It uses widget.system too, so you can all see the processes behind it now smiley It's got a completely new look too. But for now, I'll just update this one slightly, and keep you in suspense for newer versions smiley (I want to get as much mileage out of the widget plugin as possible smiley )

This widget is definately one of the best 3rd party widgets available, great work Chris

Posted by: deggy on Apr 07, 05 (7:06 PM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

Hello Chris... brilliant work and i concur that this is a great widget and a huge enhancement to the built in OSX functionality.

I have two thoughts to share that I hope you might be able to consider and include in future versions.

1. Clipboard destination. In many cases, a screenshot need is for immediate inclusion in a document, email, ichat or other 'work in progress', and having the option to store a capture in the clipboard for immediate pasting is very attractive.

2. File naming. Instead of creating a static document name, would it be possible to have the ability to name it after the capture and before the save as a file?

Great work and I'll definitely evangelize this around the office! smiley

Posted by: geoffmitchell on Apr 08, 05 (9:14 PM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

Hi Geoff. I've just quickly added in support for going to clipboard, and I'll have a think about your second suggestion. I'm trying to think of the best interface for that kind of thing...

Cheers for the evangelising smiley

My favourite 3rd party widget. It looks great, and works great too. My only suggestion for improvement was clipboard support, but it looks like you've taken care of that. Keep up the great work!

Hello Chris, great widget! but i have some trouble using it; when I choose the option hide dashboard and make a fullscreen capture I still see dashboard, while it is going away if you know what i mean...-> the dashboard blows out of your screen and I see that in the screencapture.... I hope that i made myself clear cause it's hard to explain in english... But anyways do you know why that is? Still a great widget though! I hope you could help me out...

One of the best widgets so far.

Any possibilty to add a "Quality" slider bar as well? Especially for for the jpg setting, it appears to be saving the captures at full quality despite reducing the Size. Thanks and great work.

Does anybody know a solution for my problem as described above??? Many thanks cause I want to use this widget badly but it's not working fine now.....

Posted by: sicone on May 03, 05 (4:51 PM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

and here you can find a screenshot made with this widget. It describes my problem perfectly!

Posted by: sicone on May 03, 05 (4:55 PM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

Melon, yup, a quality slider can be done. Sicone, I'll get right on that. In the mean time, change line 21 of capture.js to be: setTimeout("Capture.takeScreenShot(format, file_path, parseInt(size), mode)", 300);

The 300 is the delay until it takes the shot in milliseconds, so increase it if you're still having the problem. I'd like to know what value you choose smiley Oh, I'm planning on having a 'delay until shot' option anyway with a slider, but we'll see.

Posted by: Chris (developer) on May 04, 05 (3:26 PM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

Excellent, now it's definitely the best widget there is!!! And maybe you could add some functions from the app SnapNDrag in the future, then it would even get better!!! Thanks for the solution and for the great widget of course!!!

Posted by: sicone on May 04, 05 (4:18 PM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

ow sorry i choose 300 as the delay value and it works perfectly now!

Posted by: sicone on May 04, 05 (4:19 PM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

This is some good stuff. I also had the problem that Sicone described. Dunno why it isn't set at 300 by default...

The widget doesn't appear to have an own icon though. That's a shame, but I like it a lot anyway.

Very useful widget, but it keep taking screenshots of the whole Desktop in the "mid-air" smiley How do I solve that?

Posted by: natalia on May 31, 05 (5:31 AM) for version 0.75b (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

Nice Widget, Chris!

Errr... stupid question, maybe... I want to change the destination of the captures -- I don't want to clutter up my Desktop.

It says "Drag Folder Here to Change" How do I do that exactly if I'm in Dashboard and can't get to Finder?

Agree about the option to name screengrabs, as well.

TIA,

Tim

Posted by: TimDanaher on May 31, 05 (12:51 PM) for version 0.75b (previous version)

Hi.
To drag a folder on, drag it from the finder then, whilst still dragging, activate the Dashboard layer (f12 or whatever you've set it to) and drop it on Capture where it says.

It wasn't 300 by default because the problem isn't exhibited on any of my machines, so I didn't know it existed.

Anyway, Capture is being updated today with a few extra options and stuff.

Cheers,
Chris

Posted by: Chris (developer) on May 31, 05 (4:03 PM) for version 0.75b (previous version)

Thanks, Chris --

Although dragging a Folder AND activating Dashboard is a bit difficult if you only have one arm. (I could always F12 with my nose I suppose...;0)

Posted by: TimDanaher on May 31, 05 (7:59 PM) for version 0.75b (previous version)

I cant by any means get the save destination to work (0.79b). I drag the folder and the changes show up in the Widget (for example desktop) but when I take a screen shot it never shows up on the desktop. (And no I do not have the save to clipboard option checked)

Posted by: ice5339 on Jun 01, 05 (1:19 AM) for version 0.79b (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

Tim, you could either set dashboard as a hot corner or to a button on your mouse, if you have a lot of buttons on it. Otherwise it would be rather tricky smiley

ice, yeah. It seems I messed up a bit. It doesn't seem to support folders with spaces in their names. I'll sort that out in the morning.

Posted by: Chris (developer) on Jun 01, 05 (1:46 AM) for version 0.79b (previous version)

I am having the same problem as ice. I can save to the clipboard fine, but not to any folders or to the desktop whether there is a space in the name or not. Fortunately I have iClip so I can save 20 of them at a time in clipboard at the moment, though I cant save them anywhere else without adding them to a document first.

Posted by: robertlethiecq on Jun 01, 05 (3:39 AM) for version 0.79b (previous version)

Guys, I am so sorry about that. It was the dumbest mistake ever in the history of programming smiley

Anyhoo - it's fixed now. I'd set the wrong variable at one point so things went awry. You may need to delete your preferences (~/Library/Preferences/widget-com.blackbook.capture.plist) for it to work. The new version should be up soon with the fix.

Once again: really sorry about that.

Posted by: Chris (developer) on Jun 01, 05 (7:00 PM) for version 0.79b (previous version)

Hi,

Excellent widget (probably the best one in fact). I just wanted to know how i could have the extension even if i take a capture at 100 level (i have the extension under the 100 choice). Thanx for your answer.

Benoit

I am still having the same problem as before. I deleted the preference file listed, deleted the widget, reinstalled the new version, and still no luck. I do not keep my widgets in user/library/widgets/ but instead keep them in harddrive/library/widgets/ so I dont know if that would make a difference.

Posted by: robertlethiecq on Jun 02, 05 (2:41 AM) for version 0.79 (current version)

ok, got it to work. I had to delete the preference file and then log out. Log back in after and start the dashboard, tiger will start all the widgets again, and create a new preference list for capture, which will then work.

Can't get it to work properly. Saving to clipboard works fine but although I managed to change destination folder thanks to the answer above, this folder is always empty of JPEGs after a capture (and, yes, I have unchecked the save to clipboard box). What can I have done wrong?

I used a similar MacOS 9 utlity ages ago that had as feature a save dialogue after each capture. This was ideal and forced me to name the captures instead of cluttering up the destination file with anonymous numbered "Pictures."

I would wish for another selection field colour that is easier to distinguish from the underlying Dashboard "smoke glass" nuance.

Yes! Thank you for making this. It's a great way to get around the "no screenshot" rule in DVD player.

Posted by: Facamus on Jun 06, 05 (10:25 AM) for version 0.79 (current version)

Maxmax - try closing Capture then deleting the preference file: ~/Library/Preferences/widget-com.blackbook.capture.plist.

Posted by: Chris (developer) on Jun 07, 05 (4:17 AM) for version 0.79 (current version)

Thanks Chris, it worked like a charm. You really have made a useful widget here that I will use a lot. As I just did a full screen capture to try it out I remembered that my old app with similar functions also had an option to either hide or show the cursor in the captures. That would also be on my wish list.

Posted by: maxmax on Jun 07, 05 (4:54 AM) for version 0.79 (current version)

Oh! You know what? With every revision of Capture I mean to add that, but always forget. I'll definitely do it for the next one smiley

Posted by: Chris (developer) on Jun 07, 05 (6:57 AM) for version 0.79 (current version)

Nice tool smiley However, if I save a screenshot into the clipboard, it is not possible to paste it directly
into Gimp. This is due to the fact, that Gimp uses the X11 clipboard. There are 2 ways to treat this problem:

(1) In Gimp's menu, use File->Acquire->From Clipboard to move the contents of the system clipboard to the X11 clipboard

(2) Use the tool "MacClipboard", which is available at http://leuksman.com/pages/MacClipboard

Best wishes,

Andreas

Great widget!!! This deserves a place in my Tower of Dash! (http://www.freespace.nu/showimage.php?link=/files/394_1122508990.jpg)

Only thing: I can't take a picture of a menu because I can't have a menu open. To see what I am trying to do, open a menu with the mouse, and press Shift+Cmd+3

I love this Widget. However, I have noticed one small problem while capturing DVD screenshots.

If I choose the Capture Window option, the resulting picture becomes slightly jagged. If I choose the Capture Selection option, the resulting image is fine.

See the screenshots I took here to see what I mean:

http://members.shaw.ca/asmack/screenshots/

I think the Capture Window option results in slight jaggedness because it inadvertently reduces the overall width by exactly 1 pixel. Can you fix this in the next update?

Hello

I flippin love everything about this widget, from functionality to size, but...

Just recently I have this problem:

I click on the "capture selection" icon then click on "take screenshot."

Normally the dashboard overlay would fade and I could chose an area on the screen. Now it only allows me to take selection shots off the dashboard overlay.

Am I doing somthing wrong?

Thanks!
Raoul

Dear Folks:

Duh...

Just figured it out. (I learned to read.)

There is a button that determines if you are photographing the dashboard overlay or the screen, right next to the "take screenshot" button.

I truly love this widget. Wish there were a PC version for the piece of junk I use at work.

My favotite widget, hands down.

Yours,
Raoul
