Communications - GMail Checker

Description: This widget is a quick way to see if you have any new emails in your GMail account by simply looking at the Dashboard. You can then see who it is from and also a little summary of each e-mail.

This widget was coded by Chris O'Brien and the graphics and idea (and original code) are mine.

The correct spelling of GMAIL is "Gmail". Great work! I like this widget. I wish the author could make normal POP/IMAP version for this. I do support this author!

Thanks takaaki.

New version of Widget coming soon. And this was a joint effort between myself and Chris O'Brien. Why isn't his name here?smiley

Does it or will it have the ability to launch into your Gmail account if you click on it somewhere? If not, might be something to think about.

could you make the window scalable? it's so huge...

Posted by: dra on Apr 25, 05 (12:17 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

Does this poll via ATOM or through some other method? If it doesn't poll through ATOM, consider doing that, as you can retrieve the message sender, subject, and even the full (or partial) body of the mail. For an example, look at the menubar Gmail checker "Gee!". Also, any possibility of making it play a system sound when new mail gets here?

Posted by: bobfather on Apr 25, 05 (12:32 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

Oh, and one more thing I forgot! How about a user-definable amount of time between polls?

Posted by: bobfather on Apr 25, 05 (12:32 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

can you make it so that you can click on the top, and it will resize to just show you the number...so like if you have no new emails it would be that red thing, and a zero, etc

Posted by: jtylko on Apr 25, 05 (12:59 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

Final suggestion - is it possible to make it reset to '0' new mail on click? It's a pain to know I have no new mail, yet have the widget display I have new messages until it refreshes.

Hi, that's nice but could you make the widget a little bit smaller?

Posted by: germinator on Apr 25, 05 (4:33 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

I agree... excellent widget. Takes up a lot of screen real-estate, especially on my 15 inch PB. Otherwise, very nic smiley

On 428, can't find an info button to flip it around to enter my login info. Is this the main problem so far? Also, I second the preference for a smaller widget, perhaps with only the title and count and the opportunity to expand the box to show headers.

Posted by: earthsaver on Apr 26, 05 (5:29 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

HI , ok this new version works fine on 428.
i just downloaded it, i noticed that to check the mail it open my browser ??? why , its cant check gmail without opening brower, maybe im wrong, i think the interface is a bit big it would be cool if it would have some button at the top to make it smaller, while indicating email count. Or having the choice between 2 interface big, small, smaller. also it would be cool to add multiple accounts in one window.
Overall , its great , since Tiger is not even out yet.

2 post up earthsaver said : can't find an info button to flip it,

Buddy just move your cursor over while holding "alt" or "option" key.
or press the + sign on the botton left of your screen the "" put more widget on your screen ""

Taking into cosideration the fact this version is more than 1.0, this widget is quite disappointing. I don't mention all aspects of my disappointment, but let me say one thing. The logo consumes too much place on a screen. I would like to see more Apple-like, minimal, simple interface.

i would like to see smaller space in all widget
its now working in 428, thx

Posted by: Randy on Apr 27, 05 (12:26 PM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

one more thing , i receive a email from a forum,
but i cant see the link the text wont show up.
the text stop the url, i would like to be able to click the url to go on the forum page.

What about security ? Does Gmail Checker send my log/pass in the open ?

Does GmCh check my mail each minute/10 min/hour ?

Can GmCh warn me with one system sound i select
right now i use gcount in my menu bar.

Yup, it's huge. Sorry about that, I've been whinging to Steve about it for months. The build number of this seems to arbitrary, I don't know why Steve gave it that number, tbh.

I've been extraordinarily busy recently, but I'm now free for a while. I'll get this widget sorted over the coming days. Sorry it's a disappointment in it's current state.

Cheers,

Chris.

Thing you need to fix :

- smaller Interface,

- checking email each minute and many more time choice,

- Longer email text,

- when closing widget, and reopening it, making it,
remember the lastest"S" , gmail account"S" and password"S".

- Multiple accounts handleling, in one widget.

- choice of sounds on new email.

i dont know if all of this is possible.
i hope it is.

thx.

Posted by: Randy on Apr 27, 05 (10:19 PM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

Yeah, all of that is possible Randy. I think if I was to make it check each minute I'd make it an option on the back. Widgets shouldn't do anything at all when the dashboard isn't shown, otherwise they'll just take up unnecessary cycles. A user option for it though, puts the wastage straight in the hands of the user... hmm...

Multiple accounts is a great idea. Having multiple instances, yeah? I like it. OK. I'm free tomorrow, so I'll see what I can come up with smiley

Could use a refresh-button, but nice work, I like it and I'll keep it. =)

Hey, what happened to this widget? I'd really like to use it on a daily basis, but with my dashboard as crowded as it is I just don't have the room. Chris, could you really quickly make a collapseable version? it'd be really helpful and let me use this great, if not enormous, widget.

I agree with the making this minimizable and adding a refresh button but does anyone else have the problem where it only refreshed on opening?

Posted by: Bryan on Jun 03, 05 (4:30 AM) for version 2.0 (current version)   View Detailed Rating

Wasn't working, fixed by changing URL to https://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom in the script gmailchecker.js.

However, the problem is I retrieve my e-mail by POP access, leaving it in the inbox, and Gmail Checker keeps displaying it as unread, even after I've read it -- unless I go into Gmail and mark messages as read. The only solution would be to have checkboxes in the widget to clear mail as read, much in the same way I do when I check my Gmail in netnewswire.

This aside, Gmail Checker is a nice piece of work.

Woah make it smaller man and minimizable!

Posted by: rblitz on Jun 27, 05 (3:40 AM) for version 2.0 (current version)

I have 4 new emails and it doesnt show up.

I thought the widget crashed because when it is refreshing it doesn't say anything.

At the back: for what are those two fields? (I know it, but what about a caption?)

Running it the first time should flip back automaticly to enter information.

I think it is really big just to show emails.

the red badge is to small for >10 new emails and the number on it looks horrible.

when does it update?
