I'll skip the rating (it was going to be 1-star) and ask this: what does this very large widget do for me that the many, many other little tiny Gmail counters don't do?

If you have a problem with it, then don't use it. It's as simple as that. There's no need to flame man.

It wasn't a flame, he was asking a question. He was even so nice as to not add a 1-star rating to your widget. He does have a valid point, though.

I like it because unlike others, it actually says it's google. it is big for small function though.

if the others deserve a 3-4-5, so does this one.

oh sorry, this widget is actually very good (and layout also looks fine), I thought it didn't redirect to my gmail page... smiley

I've yet to implement some other features that I think will be interesting additions. I designed/wrote this widget the week before Tiger was officially released. At the time it was a reasonable size in comparison to all of the widgets that Apple supplied. It sat on my dashboard for my own personal use for about 3-4 months.

Why not just use your mail application, there are so many pointless widgets, it risks making the whole widget thing a joke.

Oh, wait, hang on...

Functionality: It may not provide an entire email client in widget form like some expect it to have, but it does exactly what it sets out to do which is simply to "Display the number of unread emails in your Gmail inbox". Though it probably should be renamed to reflect that.

Design: Despite what others have said it's not too big (though it could be smaller). It's simply a notifier so there doesn't need to be anything more than a message counter and link to the inbox (hint: the link is in the star. Click it). It does what it's supposed to do and is just the right size for my 1680 x 1050 resolution 20 inch monitor. Doing exactly what you're designed to do isn't a crime.

Creativity: Not too creative. It's kind of an obvious idea for a widget. What probably could be added to raise the score here is if it provided features beyond its express design. Like access to other mail services. Maybe a drop-down drawer with the first few summaries of new messages in the inbox. Maybe an alarm for keywords that pops up an alert window outside of the Dashboard.

I'm not going to take the compulsive cool-guy type flame-him-for-tiny-offenses-and-then-deny-that-I-was-flaming route and just say it does what it set out to do and nothing more. I would encourage him to include more ideas and shrink the size a smidge, but if he's trying to keep the footprint (in both size and feature creep) down I understand.

BTW, for those of us who are forgetful and just want a quick up-front automated way to see if there are new messages and we don't necessarily care to know what they are, just so that we can see there are messages, this is perfect. I don't see why there's so much energy spent on such a controversy over this widget.
