Schedules - WhatsOn

Description: WhatsOn is a widget that leverages Python to list TV listings.

This is the first release of this widget and is considered usable. If you notice any problems please inform me.

If anyone wants to design a better interface, please feel free to email me. I would be more than gracious to offer full credit to any design that I would use.

It works fine, but I noticed that it seems to download every listing for every channel at a time and that takes time. Haven't used it for long, but if it takes that long every time I start my computer or want to change providers, etc it may be a waste. Maybe if it only retrieved the channels you are currently viewing, it would load faster. Another thing to think about is some type of spiffy animation like the Apple widgets where they slide; when you click the next channel category it would slide in pushing the older aside like smooth scrolling. Final thing that brought the functionality down is that there appears to be no way of resizing the widget, say to view more than two time slots and five channels. It really is an above average widget, that just needs a few things polished out to make it exemplary. (It needs to be shiny smiley )

I couldn't agree more with your comments, and thank you for your input. Just to note, this is not considered a completely polished Widget, but I wanted to see the feedback of my efforts so far.

Yes, it downloads every channel listing for the next 5 hours and thus the longer load time. I still need to do optimizations on the data I'm retrieving. I may be able to limit it to only retrieving the data that is currently viewed. That would improve the initial load times but their will be more delays when changing channels or times.

I also totally agree with the shiny animations. You will most definitely see those kinds of changes in the near future.

Optimizations are my largest concern right now. I will continue my testing and attempt to get the loading down to fractions of a second instead of seconds.

This is a great widget, however jby1chaos is completely correct in the improvements that is needed to make this "exemplary." I would also like to add that you should look to what Watson did in its TV section most prominently the ability to add favorites. this would allow the choosing of channels that either one would watch the most, or, for those of us that don't have cable, the channels that we only have. The next thing that would be helpful would be a date at the top, for I found myself becoming disoriented when I hit the back time button a few times. Finally the ability to not only look at what is on now but to choose what shows are on at what time in the future, or past, through either a text field or a drop-down menu, as displayed in Watson.

Excellent Widget. As has been said before, I would like to be able to resize it to show more time/more channels. I think that is a more important aspect of the design than the TV look (always worry about your design priorities smiley

No off air option. No select channels to display option. Why is it assumed that everyone subscribes to cable or satellite TV?
