It won't let me access any of my other widgets.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…………………

I'd like to be able to kick & punch it rather than just flinging, but hey, it's still cute!

Ahahaha, this thing is great. One of the few truely "original" widgets i've seen in a while, and its fun! Great job!

Only complaint is that I cannot use my other widgets while this one is out. But dang this is fun to play withsmiley

I love it. I second the idea that this widget breaks the mold, even if it's function is only to be silly and fun. I don't have trouble accessing my other widgets with this active.

Nice job!

This is the coolest widget ever. At least of ones that dont have a "function."

BUT, there are a few issues. It totally spazzes out my dashboard when i launch it rather than doing the normal wavey liquid. On my 1ghz 15 powerbook it is pretty laggy.

Also it is MUCH too heavy when it settles.

Its a great, creative, and original program. Props for you! One critique I have for it is that the physics of the ball is kind of lacking. I notice that it drops way too fast. Also, sometimes the ball is very jittery as it bounces around the screen. Other than that, great work!

Agree with everyone, except that my toher widgets work fine.

It spazzes out when opening and it is definitely too heavy. It really is quite a creative widget. Great thinking. Fix those bugs and yoiu've really got something great here.

Posted by: ij00mini on Dec 05, 05 (2:46 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

Thanks for the feedback, I'll look into these issues. First, the broken ripple effect seems to be a bug with OS X. As for the physics the settings will be tweaked as I test on more machines.

Anyone having problems, such as those who can't access other widgets, please msg me your OS X version, monitor resolution and some of the widgets you can't access. I haven't had this issue on the machines I've tested it on so hopefully there is an easy fix.

Thanks!

This widget is a great start on an even great list of possibilities. Maybe dragging the mouse so you can kick the ball would be really cool, or add an option for colors and sounds perhaps.

Posted by: Motoi on Dec 05, 05 (4:05 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

Add an option to tie the physics to the sensors in the laptops (not much help when it comes to the angle of the screen, but hey . . .).

Funnest thing EVER! AWESOME widget! Keep up the great work!

Just one word: SUPER! Compliments for your creativity.

Superb!

I especially love the shadow and reflection details. Truly beautiful.

best widget EVAR!

Superb job! I love this thing! One of the most brilliant widgets ever, without a doubt!

The only thing you need to fix is the gravitational attraction of the ball; it is, in fact, much too heavy.

This widget is awsome, it is very fun to watch!

Lots of fun! Could use a little more work in the physics area.

Supurb. This is what Dashboard was invented for.

Posted by: gnome (Administrator) on Dec 07, 05 (12:52 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

the bounce is much better now.

and i just want to restate something. before i mentioned it was laggy for me. But i just realized that was only when i had my processor at reduced power to conserve battery power.

Posted by: blinkmetoys on Dec 07, 05 (2:48 AM) for version 1.01 (previous version)

Excellent update. You hit all the right points. I can wait for colorssmiley

Posted by: Motoi on Dec 07, 05 (2:54 AM) for version 1.01 (previous version)

I'm probably the only person who would like to see the weight fall between it's original and current values. Part of the attractiveness of the previous release was the quick return to unity. I want to throw again yet the ball is still bouncing.

Still a great widget!

Posted by: alset on Dec 07, 05 (5:30 AM) for version 1.01 (previous version)

"all feedback is appreciated."

I want less friction on the ground so I can roll it bouncing from wall to wall.

Posted by: DrDip on Dec 07, 05 (12:19 PM) for version 1.01 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

I'm with alset, it seems like it's a bit TOO bouncy, and you can't quickly throw it again because it's just sitting there bouncing... bouncing... bouncing...

Also, think you could make it easier to drag it and then "let go"? Most of the time when I do this it simply stops and falls straight down.

Would also be cool if we could "punch" it.

Posted by: SiliconX on Dec 07, 05 (12:49 PM) for version 1.01 (previous version)

Ohhh, sudden inspiration, only thought of this after I posted my previous comments.

It would be *awesome* if we could whack it with the cursor like a Ping-pong paddle. I have no idea how you would do this, or if it's possible at all, but it would be really fun to see how long you could keep it bouncing this way.

1111 downloads!!!!

Posted by: IanTheMacFan on Dec 07, 05 (5:44 PM) for version 1.01 (previous version)

I love the bounce, so I've made a few mods to the physics. You can make them too. Right click on the widget file, choose Show Package Contents, and open the file called main.js.

TO MAKE THE FLOOR NEAR-FRICITONLESS:
Search for this line:
xvel *= FRICTION; // gliding along the floor

Replace this line with:
// xvel *= FRICTION; // gliding along the floor

TO REDUCE AIR FRICTION:
Search for this line:
FRICTION = 0.95; // this is actually more of a colision penalty

Replace this line with:
FRICTION = 1.0; // this is actually more of a colision penalty

Posted by: gnome (Administrator) on Dec 09, 05 (1:22 AM) for version 1.01 (previous version)

SiliconX thinks it's too bouncy, gnome thinks not enough. Oh well, glad you're all enjoying it.

Posted by: Nate (developer) on Dec 09, 05 (2:03 AM) for version 1.01 (previous version)

It's awesome, but it uses 7% CPU idle, which I think is too much. If you could make it freeze when dashboard isn't open, it would be much better.

Posted by: zweben on Dec 12, 05 (2:23 AM) for version 1.01 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

If people all have different opinions on the weight, colour, and friction, then maybe it would be possible to make a control panel on the back with sliders for those values?

Posted by: paradoxial on Dec 12, 05 (8:56 PM) for version 1.01 (previous version)

*Very* cool!

Question: is it possible to make it able to be brought out of the dashboard layer, like other widgets, with 'dev mode' on? I can't figure out how to do it if is…

I know, it might be too much of a processor/RAM hog to be worth it, but once in a while…

Also, it only bounces around my main screen; is it possible to have it recognize that there's more than one screen to bounce around on?

Keep up the great work!!

Posted by: jiclark on Jan 04, 06 (7:07 AM) for version 1.01 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

There should be an option to have it bounce off other widgets!

Posted by: zweben on Jan 24, 06 (5:30 AM) for version 1.02 (previous version)

The update seems to take less cpu power, bravo!

Posted by: Bryan on Jan 24, 06 (10:58 PM) for version 1.02 (previous version)

I love this one. I would like to see if react to the "drop Sensor" inside my powerbook. Basically it would roll around if you turn your computer. This would only work on a few macs i know but it would be soo cool.

Wow! This widget is phenomenal... i am in awe with the quality of your graphics, physics, and user experience. You have done things that I, as a widget developer, have never thought possible. Outstanding work, I wish there were more widgets with this finesse.

Great update. The coding on this widget is phenominal. You should make useful widgets too!

Because they would be awesome.

Posted by: zweben on Jun 19, 06 (6:50 PM) for version 2.0 (previous version)

Also, I just checked and the widget now takes up 0% CPU when the dashboard isn't open. So I can leave it open all the time now. Very nice.

Posted by: zweben on Jun 20, 06 (1:01 AM) for version 2.0 (previous version)

this is great. it barely lags even my ol' 400 mhz. my only wish now is a stripey ball like the one in the logo. maybe other patterns too.

Posted by: neko on Jun 24, 06 (7:54 AM) for version 2.0 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

Tiny bug (you might be aware of it)

No matter what color the ball is, its reflection on the bottom of the screen is always red. If it's too much work to get that image to change with the ball color, I think desaturating it to grey would be good enough.

I'm probably the only person who knows or cares though =P

Anyway i'm looking forward to see what you come up with next.

Posted by: zweben on Jun 30, 06 (12:44 AM) for version 2.01 (previous version)

I would really like to be able to change the physics, but when I open menu.js it opens in Safari, and I can't edit it. How should I go about editing it?

Posted by: Gurglebot on Jul 01, 06 (9:00 PM) for version 2.01 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

Gurglebot: right click the .js, select 'open with' then textedit if it's there, otherwise 'other...' and you'll know what to do from there.

Posted by: neko on Jul 01, 06 (10:48 PM) for version 2.01 (previous version)

It would be nice of there were more physics you could modify, like gravity. It would be cool to be able to play with your own "custom" redball.

Posted by: Gurglebot on Jul 02, 06 (2:40 PM) for version 2.01 (previous version)

A suggestion and a comment:

-Add skins that are not just plain colors, like sports teams, and such.

-If anyone is interested I found out how to make the redball "teleport." Hold the ball with your mouse, and press space (still holding). Without letting go, move your mouse somewhere else on the screen. Press space again, while still holding the mouse. Someone probably already discovered that, but I wanted to make it available to everyone. Please, comment on it.

Posted by: Gurglebot on Jul 03, 06 (2:05 AM) for version 2.01 (previous version)

Another comment:

To do slow-mo, throw the ball, and hold space throughout the entire thing.

Help! This was one of my favorite widgets on Tiger. I just got Leopard and it doesn't work...it just hangs there, frozen. Any ideas?
