System Utilities - Abracadabra

Description: Files and folders dropped into the magic hat instantly disappear from the Finder. More amazing, these files escape even the powerful search technology of Spotlight, preventing someone from seeing or searching for those files you just don't want found.

Not to worry though, say the magic (pass)word and you can pull any file you've hidden from the hat simply by selecting it from the popup menu on the back. This menu is password protected, so that not even the names of the hidden files are visible to those who desire to learn your secrets.

Please note that this widget merely hides your files from all but the most savvy computer users. However, it does not intend nor guarantee to prevent compromise of your files from other security concerns. For true protection of sensitive data, please look into the File Vault software supplied by Apple and built-in to Mac OSX Tiger. This widget is provided "as is", and Interdimension Media assumes no responsibility for permanent loss of files or folders resulting from its use.*

*Note that Abracadabra merely remembers the paths to files. If you inadvertently alter the path to a hidden file by moving its parent directories, the magic will be lost and the file will not reappear.

Thanks, will come in handy. A few people may not realize that you have to drag the file to say part of the desktop that activates Dashboard and then drop it in the hat.

danman -

Would you mind using the form on my website (www.interdimensionmedia.com/widget.html) to submit that bug? I'll need a bit more info from you to track it down, since I cannot reproduce the error.

Thanks for reporting it.

To those who have similar troubles:

The particular problem in danman's case, as referenced by the joke above, was that he was attempting to place a directory in the hat that contained the abracadabra widget itself. He was trying to put the hat INTO the hat...

If you are having similar problems but this doesn't help you out, please contact me via the link provided an my previous post.

Helpful. Would like to see it reset itself to the front of the hat when dashboard is closed and reopened.

Please note that while it will hide a file in the finder, it does not seem to prevent it from being re-opened by selecting it with the "open recent" command (or equivalent) in the file menu of an application.

Posted by: nath182 on Jul 16, 07 (6:13 AM) for version 1.01 (previous version)

I've had the widget installed for a while but not using it. Now I would like to take it in again. My problem is I forgot my password.

The hat is empty. First I uninstalled the widget. Restarted my Mac. Cleaned it by using OnyX. But nothing helps. The hat is still locked.

Anyone got any proposal?

Best regards

First, I must say that I LOVE this widget. But, I have a major problem. I had hidden a file into the hat that was on a firewire drive. I went to reveal the file by removing it from the hat, but didn't realize that the firewire drive was not mounted for some reason. So, Abracadabra said it couldn't find the file (obvisouly), and I realized the error, so I mounted the drive and went to reveal it again and it was no longer in the hat. It is also still hidden. I am not sure how I can correct this now and reveal my now missing folder. Please help.

ab2ski -

I have the same problem. I put a folder on my external drive into the hat. At a later point I restarted my computer and the folder was gone from the hat and my external. I can access some files within the folder by using "Open Recent Items" from the applications which had already accessed the folder. Have you found any solutions? Please help.

Thanks.

ab2ski -

I found a way to get back the Abracadabrad files. Apparently the magic of the hat is to place a period in front of the folder or file name. This prevents the finder from displaying it. The good news is that the invisible files should stay intact even if you write onto the drive. To fix this follow these steps:

1- open the application Terminal
2- type the command: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
3- type the command: killall Finder

Now check the your drive for the missing files. The now should be visible. They will also have a period in front of their file names.

4- remove the period from each file name.

Now you need to hide the invisible files again.

5- type the command: efaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
6- type the command: killall Finder

I hope this helps.
