Math & Science - ProteinGlimpse

Description: ProteinGlimpse is a free widget for visualizing macromolecules retrieved from the RCSB Protein Data Bank or any supported molecule file format dropped over it.
It is powered by Jmol, a free, open source molecule viewer for students, educators, and researchers in chemistry and biochemistry. It was inspired by the FirstGlance in Jmol project.

I want to thanks Daniel Gasco Rodriguez for the astonishing graphical interface provided for this widget. (http://www.dgarte.com)
Author: jaime
Version: 1.3
New in v1.3: - Now you can visualize the title found in RCSB PDB to describe the macromolecule shown.

- A new button will appear, any time you get back a file from the RCSB PDB, that will link you to the macromolecule web page found in RCSB PDB.

- Fixed some bugs found in the visualization script.

-Some minor changes introduced in the graphical interface.

I love to look at the structures. Since I am not conversant with macromolecules can you give us a list of them to insert ? I would like to take a look at some.

Sure smiley,

Here you have some examples:

- The insulin hormone 1APH
- The DNA double helix (B form) 1BNA
- The Potassium channel, 1BL8 (a membrane protein)
- The Transfer RNA (Phe), 4TNA
- A huge one, the Ribosome (large subunit 50S) 1FFK (CAUTION, 1.3 Mb )
- The HIV protease with inhibitor, 4PHV

If you are interested in a specific one determined experimentally by X-ray crystallography or NMR go to http://www.rcsb.org/pdb/searchlite.html

Have fun and thank you for the 5 stars smiley,

Jaime

A really excellent widget... I would just recommend an option to shrink the widget after viewing a structure (it takes a lot of space on a 12" PB).

Thank smiley,

I completely agree with you about the minimization option. If I solve a problem when the applet is reloaded I will implement it in the next version.

Solved! smiley

Here It is version 1.1 with this new improvements:

- Added a minimization widget option.
- The URL to download the PDB files has been change due to the modification
made in the Protein Data Bank site.
- Fixed some bugs occurring when applying the visualization scripts.
