System Utilities - Shredder

Description: You’re familiar with them around the office; now you can have the convenience and security of a digital document shredder right in your Dashboard. Three shred levels give you just the amount of protection you need, and its satisfying animation lets you watch your live document previews shred to bits.

Low: Bypass the trash can. This is a quick way to get rid of those files you know you don’t need, leaving the trash can for those things you just might want to dig out later.

Medium: Secure erase. This mode overwrites your shredded documents with a US Department of Defense compliant 7 pass procedure.

High: Virtual Paper Pulp. Use this setting for only the most sensitive files. Though it might be slow, the 35 pass Gutmann algorithm will ensure that no data from these files is ever recovered.

Although I don't know how secure this widget actually is, seeing your documents actually get "shredded" is very enjoyable.

:/ The animation might be worth it, if you're into that, but far more efficient is to use the Finder's built-in shredding (with 7-pass overwrite) from the Finder menu, hold the Command key when selecting Empty Trash from the trash can's context menu, or assign it a shortcut key using the Keyboard System Preferences pane.

(You can change the built-in Secure Empty Trash feature's number of rewrites; it's a bit of a hack, but you set it once:

GothAlice, those are some good tips. However, don't you think it's a bit harsh to rate a 1 on functionality even when the widget functions 100% as promised by the description?

It's true that there are other ways to achieve similar results, but even your suggestion doesn't offer the convenience of being able to shred any file or set of files, at any security level, on demand *without* emptying the entire contents of the trash. That's the primary motivator for using the widget.
