Fun & Games - miniDropper

Description: Those of you who remember the original dropper will also remember it's large size. This iteration aims to keep the game nice and small and not get in the way of your other widgets.

Use the arrow keys to move the piece, rotate and drop. You can pause the game by pressing p.

Very, very nice!

One suggestion, though: Could you possibly change it so that instead of a piece going all the way to the bottom after pressing down, have it allow you to hold down for as long as you want, and then be able to let go and move/rotate the piece again at normal speed? That would make it perfect!

I agree, great job. I don't mean to be picky, however to make this perfect, you just need change two things:
1) Don't make the piece fly to the bottom at one touch of the down arrow. Make the down arrow speed it up but once released, slow the piece back to normal.
2) You have to make it so that you can slide the pieces in when they get to the bottom. This is huge.

If you can do both of these, I would say you have the best widget game so far. Thanks

Yeah, I also forgot to change a line of code to reflect a new class name - hence why you can't see any debris. Whoops.

I'll get onto making the changes you guys have suggested over the next few days.

Ditto on the down button stuff.
Only other suggestion is the colour and size of the blocks - because of the game's size on the screen (pretty small...) and the size and colour of the blocks, it can be really hard to look at and play the game. It would be marginally better if the blocks were more solid colours - but even more better if it was a tad bigger.

Excellent little game. I agree with the previous points about the down button and on making the blocks a solid color.

Chris, very cool. I just submitted my own version of Tetris, but it's complete crap - starting with the ultra-crappy coding. However, when I wrote Scriptris, it was a learning experience so I'm still proud of it. smiley
Enough babbling. I look forward to seeing some of your other stuff.

I have quite a few complaints about this widget, although I understand that it's still a beta.
1.) Because of the small size, lining up pieces becomes very difficult until the piece goes lower. I suggest some sort of gridlines to make it easier to line up. (I'll probably add those myself anyway though...)
2.) The lighter colored blocks are very hard to see under the highlight at the top of the widget. Make the pieces darker colors.
3.) Sometimes after changing the preferences none of the pieces are visible, and the debris is never visible, even after restarting the widget.
4.) Instead of landing 1 step after the piece reaches the bottom and being able to be slid a bit before it lands like in the older official Tetrises, it lands the moment it reaches the bottom block, so the pieces can't be slid into gaps by the bottom.
5.) Currently, every game I play comes up with the exact same pieces. it is possible to play 2 simultaneous instances side-by-side and play them the exact same, as the same pieces come up on each.
6.) I also agree about all the down-button stuff.
7.) It's not on Konfabulator. smiley
If I can think of anything else, I'll be back to bug you some more..smiley

I covered point 3 above - I just forgot to add a "_0" in one line of code when I switched it to using multiple colours. I've fixed it a while back, but not uploaded it here yet.
The lack of randomness is a Dashboard bug, I believe. (Still). Using Math.random() seems to always return the same 'random' number on launch. I'll put in a workaround (and also check to see if what I'm saying is right).

Yup, it's small. Bone of contention for me and Rick (the designer). I've wanted it bigger from the start - and it will be so when we have the time to improve this. And yeah, I'll sort out the landing stuff.

Math.random will always return the same set of random numbers, don't you have to seed the random generator? For example using the current time.
