It doesn't work under Dashboard, didn't try it in safari.

Your problem is easy to fix - your plists aren't valid XML. Just open up the Info.plist file, and replace all the "&" with "&".

Posted by: kalleboo on May 05, 05 (5:30 PM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

No offense, but why are you submitting it if you haven't even tested it on Dashboard yet. I thought www.dashboardwidgets.com was about Dashboard Widgets.

As of this posting, over 600 people have downloaded it. 100% can't use it WITH DASHBOARD.

They key to any good software development is good software testing.

Actually...

It's not grabbing the latest comic strip -- it's stuck on the strip from the day I originally installed it.

Posted by: TrilogyOfThelma on May 08, 05 (3:47 AM) for version 1.2b (previous version)

Does not expand to show full Sunday pages. Works fine otherwise. Would be nice to rework this as a generic comic viewer with a pull down list of all comics and you get to chose your favorite.

I can't wait for the next version of this since I love C&H.

My favorite feature is the way you can expand and retract the widget. I wish more developers did this. It's a classy touch.

Clearly still buggy. Needs to expand for Sunday and load the correct comic, but in general, it's on it's way to become a permanent part of my dashboard.

Keep up the great work.

The big fix needed is the Sunday Comics problem. Aside from that - love it!

Posted by: uburoibob on May 15, 05 (9:24 PM) for version 2.0 (previous version)

Any word on when the update is coming. I'd love to be able to read the Sunday comics.

Awesome widget, BTW.

The update is here smiley

Posted by: Hobbes (developer) on May 21, 05 (1:31 PM) for version 3.0 (previous version)

Hi Hobbes,

What are the chances of getting rid of the rounded corners on the viewer? I crops out part the dialog, which makes the strip pretty unreadable, in today's case.

But aside from the problems, THANKS - when you get this working right, it will be my favorite widget.

Posted by: uburoibob on May 21, 05 (2:47 PM) for version 3.0 (previous version)

And one more little thing - version 3.0 is getting yesterday's cartoon, but not today's... 3/20 - not 3/21.

Posted by: uburoibob on May 21, 05 (3:02 PM) for version 3.0 (previous version)

v3.0 is really shaping up.

This widget is front and center on my dashboard, and it deserves.

Great job. Just a few little bugs left (mentioned above) and this will be perfect.

Thanks again for pulling this together.

WOW!!! What service!! THANK YOU! It now works perfectly. Less than 12 hours after the request. YOU ROCK!

Still seems to be a problem with refreshing. Command-r Pulls up Sundays, but not todays comic.

I love this widget and love the new enhancements to its functionality.

Hi

Where do you live?

Strange problem... actually we've never had trouble with the upload of todays comics... and we had only 2 reports from this 'bug'.

We like to solve it but we need more information... like the place where you live, the timezone (DST?), do you shut down your Mac at night?... screenshots would be nice too.

Anyway... you may contact me at leslyweyts@G

Hey,
I live in Rochester NY EDT and still have Sunday on Monday at 8:pm. I have restarted my machine, but it is still the same. Screen shows Sunday with the button to go forward greyed out.

Thanks oreo!

I found the bug and I'm working on it... it's almost done... just some safety test and I will submit it.

Posted by: GrannySmith on May 24, 05 (11:13 AM) for version 3.2 (previous version)

Just downloaded 3.3 And.... I got today's strip, but noticed that the forward arrow was available. I clicked on it, and now I am stuck with a screen that says "Sorry, there's a problem with the internet connection"

And command-r or reinstalling doesn't help. I guess I should not have hit that forward button...

Trash the preferences for this widget!
An update will be out soon.

Posted by: GrannySmith on May 29, 05 (6:38 PM) for version 3.3 (previous version)

why can't i find the .js file for this widget ... it contains some bugs ... I am in California (PDT) and the sunday comic is shown in the small size, and monday is expanded .... probably a time-zone glitch. Show the correct comic on those days, but the sizing is wrong.
also the window needs to be refreshed after looking at a larget (Sunday size) comic ... the rounded corners are lost at the bottom of the widget if you then look at a smaller (weekday) comic ... it'd be nice to at least take a peek at the .js file. where is it?

Posted by: caitken on May 29, 05 (11:10 PM) for version 3.3 (previous version)

I deleted the pref file for this, but still have the same problem. Good bet that it's something to do with timezones. I wonder if the forward button thinks that it's a different time than the rest of the code? Of course, that may be just silly to a programmer, which I am not.

Posted by: uburoibob on May 30, 05 (4:11 AM) for version 3.3 (previous version)

Caitken: There is no .js filesmiley everthing is in the .html file. Strange because the widget get the size not the date for the resizing.

Posted by: Hobbes (developer) on May 30, 05 (3:04 PM) for version 3.3 (previous version)

Yes, but it's probably getting the size from the wrong image ... my guess is the draw function is getting the size from the sunday image, but drawing the monday image

Posted by: caitken on May 30, 05 (8:04 PM) for version 3.3 (previous version)

Update is not coming before next week... I've some exams this week... sorry

[all the bugs are problems with the timezones... I'll do an indept study before the next release so it will take a lot of time]

Posted by: GrannySmith on May 30, 05 (8:20 PM) for version 3.3 (previous version)

So ...
I changed the getHeight function such that it paints the large image if currentday.getDay() == 6
... this fixes the problem for me, but I'm not sure if this is a global fix ... i'll leave it to Hobbes or Granny to find the source of this problem and solve it.

Posted by: caitken on May 30, 05 (8:38 PM) for version 3.3 (previous version)

Didn't work for me at all. Got an error message (that was not sized properly for the widget size) saying that there was a problem with my Internet connection. It was unable to display any strips at all.

Posted by: sheila on May 30, 05 (11:17 PM) for version 3.3 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

I noticed that after minimizing the widget and then maximizing it again, the background didn't adjust to the size of the comic as you changed from day to day. For example, if you minimize while looking at a small format comic and then maximize, when you look at sunday comics, the backround doesn't compensate. This is happening because the script doesn't resize the height of the background in the draw() function ... I've corrected this ... let me know if you'd like me to post the update.

Posted by: caitken on May 31, 05 (12:27 AM) for version 3.3 (previous version)

A great idea, I really want this, but it doesn't work. I get the "problem with internet connection" error.

caitken: I wont update it because it does the wrong ting with me now smiley

Posted by: Hobbes (developer) on Jun 04, 05 (2:22 PM) for version 3.3 (previous version)

So close to being the best widget I have.

Please fix:

1. Sunday comic still does not size correctly.
2. Sporadic incorrect adjustment when refreshing or changing the date to view a different comic.

This widget really as come a long way. A few more bugs stomped out, and this will be perfect.

Thanks for your effort.

Posted by: bwhaler on Jun 05, 05 (11:00 AM) for version 3.3 (previous version)

Sunday/Monday drawing is *still* messed up (Sunday is drawn with Monday's size, Monday is drawn with Sunday's size).

Please fix this, it's the only thing I don't like about this widget!

Posted by: oneota on Jun 13, 05 (9:15 PM) for version 3.3 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

For the people that the widget doesn't resize well.
go to the HTML file find "getheight" and replace
---------------------------------
function getheight () {
if (currentday.getDay() == 0) {
return 421 * (getwidth() / 600);
} else {
return 191 * (getwidth() / 600);
}
}
---------------------------------
with
---------------------------------
function getheight () {
if (currentday.getDay() == 6) { //was
currentday.getDay() == 0
return 421 * (getwidth() / 600);
} else {
return 191 * (getwidth() / 600);
}
}
---------------------------------
The reson I don't update the widget is because here Europe the widget does resize well.
So if I update the widget there would be other people that aren't hapey

Good one. I love having my daily Calvin & Hobbes comic on my dashboard every day. But...

First thing: This "smart refresh" feature is something more like a "no refresh". Really. I'm wondering why noone has complained about this. I usually use command+R to reload each new day. Perhaps you could just put that refresh button back in the corner?

I also have some trouble when I temporarily lose my internet connection: I get this error message but when I'm back on the internet I have to refresh or reopen the widget several times until it gets that I'm online.

Maybe you could also link to ucomics.com/calvinandhobbes on the widget's backside. I still have to go there from time to time when the widget's all *****y again, so this would allow me at least to use the widget for a direct link.

Keep it up!

Posted by: Kid on Jun 22, 05 (1:38 AM) for version 3.3 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

3 things:

first: "smart refresh" works perfectly (but there are problems with other timezone's... what's yours?)

second: this widget is designed to use as less cpu resources as possible... after an error you'll have to wait one hour before the next refresh.

third: in the summer holidays, Hobbes and I will start working on a better comic viewer than this one. I guess you'll have to wait on the new one.

Posted by: GrannySmith on Jun 22, 05 (10:02 AM) for version 3.3 (previous version)

So you didn't have to wait smiley

Posted by: Hobbes (developer) on Jun 27, 05 (8:38 PM) for version 3.5 (current version)

70% of the time this widgets shows a "Sorry, there's a problem with the Internet connection" image. Nothing more -- sucks.

Actually, I get the "Sorry, there's a problem with the internet connection" image when my internet is working just fine, too. I hope that you find out what the problem is soon. This widget has such potential, but is not reliable at all... I am keeping my fingers crossed that you figure out its issues.

Nonetheless, thanks for trying!

Posted by: uburoibob on Jul 30, 05 (1:12 AM) for version 3.5 (current version)

Hi...

that's strange... this 'bug' is very rare (only 2 reports of it) so... may I ask you to try the garfield widget (you can find it on this site or the Apple Dashboard-site)...

it is based on the same core (but we've not seen reports for this 'bug'... if that widget works perfectly then I can't help you i guess... then it is something related to your connection (or your ISP)... else we can solve itsmiley... probably not in this widget anymore because we're (Hobbes and I) working on a totally new comic-viewer widget.

Anyway... if you submit extra info (like your timezone and your local time when you check this widget mostly (and it fail's))... then we will do our best to solve the problem as fast as possible...

bye

(or you can wait for our next comic-viewer... smiley)

Posted by: GrannySmith on Jul 30, 05 (10:59 PM) for version 3.5 (current version)

I'm having the same problem, with both the Garfield and the Calvin and Hobbes widgets. This is on a brand new Tiger iMac that I'm configuring for my daughter's birthday present. The Internet connection is an Airport wireless network, which runs fine for everything else. Refreshing works about 1 time in 20 -- mostly the widget just gives the "Sorry, there's a problem with the internet connection" error.

Posted by: TheCat on Aug 01, 05 (3:00 AM) for version 3.5 (current version)

Very strange... I've both widgets running for months and I've never seen the error message myself (except for testing purposes.. that was before the releasesmiley)

Question: do you see the error message only when it must refresh or also if you use the buttons?

Posted by: GrannySmith on Aug 01, 05 (12:30 PM) for version 3.5 (current version)

i always get "Sorry, there's a problem with the internet connection"
