This is a widget I have been waiting for. Great job! One problem I have is that it retrieves the XML file each time I enter the dashboard. This usually takes 5-6seconds minimum. Im not even in the dashboard for that long typically. So if possible maybe set it to refresh every 15 minutes, or have a manual refresh button if you need to refresh sooner. Just an idea.. great job!

My roomate suggested a better fix. Display the old information upon going into dashboard. Refresh it in the backround and then display the new info when it finishes loading

Awesome!! Just wish I could toggle between multiple tivos (I have three) and scroll up and down a long list, because I keep a lot of shows on my boxes.

I love the concept, but the refresh is too slow for a dashboard widget.

I only go to the dashboard for 2 - 3 seconds, waiting for the XML file to download and display is like watching grass grow.

I like johnsolo's roommate's idea.

Awesome widget! Although I wish I could view the information from multiple Tivos. Right now when I try to set a different Tivo for an instance the settings carry over to the other instances. Also the icon for the suggestions just shows up as a blue question mark.

Posted by: RedFerret on May 07, 05 (4:05 PM) for version 0.3a (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

The main problem is that the screen switches to a loading bar every time you open dashboard. All you need to do is make it load in the background and update the data when it's done. That way you could still see the old information as it loads in the new.

Other than that, good job.

Posted by: SupaPuerco on May 07, 05 (6:31 PM) for version 0.3a (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

I'll be working on a multiple instances and more seamless way of updating the data. I believe the Tivo generates the XML file on the fly, and that's why it takes so long. I'm probably going to have it update in the background, so when you look a the dashboard you can see instantly what's up to date.

I'm thinking about the scrolling thing, but I was kinda using this as an "most recent" thing and not a browser... but we'll see.

Thanks for the input!

Having problems with this -- seems to hang on the "XML Downloaded" part of the cycle, and just continues to have the progress bar roll for hours.

First off, very nice widget. I look forward to future improvements. Some things I'd like to see:

- increase the size of the IP field. I need to enter IP:port (where the port is a 4 digit number) to get access to my TiVo that is behind a router using NAT. Right now I end up one or two digits short smiley

- I'd like a way to drill down into folders.

Posted by: sctooker on May 08, 05 (7:20 AM) for version 0.3a (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

Right now I'm having a problem with it- I think I have 16 things in my now playing list. If I set it to display 17 or anything higher, it doesn't work. Sits there forever with the orange bar and says "xml downloaded". Any fix for that? (and a tip to the guy with the same problem above- try displaying fewer items then it might work)

And secondly- I'm not any sort of programmer, but I always hear that tivo is so easy to hack... So why is it that only windows guys have tivo-to-go?? I'm sure this gets much more involved, but is there any way this widget, or something like it, could let us download the shows to the computer for dvd burning??!! That would be excellent...

and another tivo suggestion while I'm at it- how about a widget that lets you schedule recordings without having to go to the website?

I'm havng a bot of a problem with the popup text for my shows umm... leaking through to whatever the current focus applicaiton is. I will move my mouse somewhere on the screen and I'll get popup text saying something about a show on my tivo.

Posted by: bradbarrish on May 08, 05 (11:57 PM) for version 0.5a (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

Brad, weird problem. It's not hiding the widget entirely if you keep your mouse over a description. if you mouse out of the window before hiding it won't do that, but I'm going to look into a solution for that.

Posted by: funkdaddy (developer) on May 09, 05 (2:09 AM) for version 0.5a (previous version)

Excellent widget. THIS is what the Dashboard was made for!!!

I think alexroet is right about his first item - if you have the widget set for more items than you have (a folder counting as one item) it seems to hang. This is what lurkingrue is seeing. Change the number of items to display until it works.

Being able to expand a Tivo folder would be a handy feature as well.

As for multiple Tivo's - just drag out multiple widgets and set them up seperately. Kinda' lame if you close widgets and reopen them though.

PS - Making a Mac version of Tivo-to-Go relies on unencrypting WMV9 with DRM. And we (Mac users)don't have the codec (even though we have WMP9), and we can't access the DRM.

Posted by: DaMacGuy on May 14, 05 (7:25 AM) for version 0.5a (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

Ah, now that this has been updated it is perfect! It updates in the background while leaving the listings showing, so that you always have your list of shows. Great! You should send this to apple for their widget section, as someone else has made a tivo widget there that is inferior to this.

Posted by: johnsolo on May 22, 05 (11:36 PM) for version 0.5a (previous version)

Can't add the to Do list AFAIK, because there is not XML file for it unless you have a hacked tivo. Sorry.

Posted by: funkdaddy (developer) on Jun 09, 05 (9:55 PM) for version 0.6a (previous version)

Is it possible to use this widget when your TiVo is networked wirelessly (so its IP address is assigned by my Airport)? I realize the IP is not a "real" unique address, but the TiVo service manages to communicate with it - so maybe this widget can also?
Would love to try it out...

Posted by: gotommy on Jun 22, 05 (8:23 AM) for version 0.6a (previous version)

You can use the TiVo's address even if it's a dynamic IP, you just have to update it every tim the Tivo's Address changes. Or you can just assign the tivo an address on your network, out of the range that your Airport will assign (so it won't conflict with another computer) and have the tivo use that IP all the time... i.e. if your tivo gets a numer like 192.168.1.6, set the tivo's IP address's las ordinal to a high number like 192.168.1.200, becasue you're not going to have 200 people on you home network so it most likely won't be assigned to other devices on the net... then your Tivo will always have the same address.

Posted by: funkdaddy (developer) on Jun 23, 05 (10:34 PM) for version 0.6a (previous version)

This is a great widget. The only improvement I could see is to make it a bit smaller. I was able to fit the previous version in alright, but the redesign is quite a bit wider and altogether takes up nearly 1/4 of my screen. Scrolling would help with this, or just finding a way to shrink it down a bit. Either way, nice work on this.

Posted by: VeritusD on Jun 25, 05 (6:21 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

A few comments:
1) Please add the option to calculate space, but do that - make it an option that people who want can turn on.
2) Please add an option to "roll up" the listing into the header, to save screen space. This looks wonderful, but also covers the majority of my screen.
3) Add an option to show how many new recordings there have been since the last time it was looked at (not sure if this is possible).
4) I've found that after one show highlights and shows its tooltip, I can't get it to show any others until I click the widget again; almost like it lost focus.

No what would be really cool?

It would be AWSOME if you could like double click on the "circle status thing" in the upper left hand corner, and this caused the whole widget to shrink down to roughly just that circle (using a smooth graphic effect of course!)

This way you can tuck it away into the corner of your screen untill you want to use it again.

I dont know how hard it would be to do that, but I think that would take this widget to the next level of cool and functionality.

This is a terrific widget and one of my favorites. I have one issue though because it does not display anything when I uncheck the "Hide folders" option. If the option is checked, everything works fine. As soon as I uncheck it, the widget shows nothing, as if there were no shows stored on the TiVo. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I am having a problem in that I have 3 tivos, one of them works just dandy. Yet, the other two, it won't show anything unless the "hide folders" is checked. If it is uncheked, it sees the tivo (I see its name of the Tivo at the top, but no listings). If I check the hide folders box, all of the listings show up.

Any ideas? Great widget!!!

I like the minimizing, but it's annoying that it pops back open whenever the widget refreshes (whenever I open the dashboard for me). It also is telling me to download version 1.5 even though I already did.

I could make it able to download .tivo files, but Mac user's can't do anything with them so there's very little point.

Posted by: funkdaddy (developer) on Oct 07, 05 (2:48 AM) for version 1.51 (previous version)

Having the ability to download .tivo files (which I assume are the actual recorded video content) would be fantastic! Once Tivo supports H.264 encoding for transfer to the iPod video, won't Mac users be able to use these files (assuming they can remove the "wrapper" and Microsoft DRM)? I really, really, really long for the ability to get my Tivo files to my Mac (and iPod video) without the hacks! I hope you will strongly consider developing the ability to get the files to the Mac. We can decode them on a Windows machine if we have to (smile).

Two questions...
Would this work with a Series 1 with an Ethernet card?

Most important, I would do immoral things to look at upcoming movies, filtered by date and stars? Is this possible?

Posted by: jwmci on Jan 13, 06 (3:11 PM) for version 1.51 (previous version)

It'd be nice list the second Tivo which is in the Now Playing list of the one configured in the Now Playing widget.

What I mean is this that you can browse and transfer shows from another Tivo on your home network. The name of the second Tivo appears as a folder in the Now Playing of the first. This could be a good work around for those with multiple Tivo's (until you can configure them all in one widget).

P.S.

Sorry if this is taboo. I started working on a remote control widget (for my series 1 with TivoWebPlus installed) but should work with any series tivo if TivoWeb(Plus) is installed. It will be similar to the remote already accessible via TivoWebPlus' menu.

This Widget was good before, but the new features make it even better. One idea though: Let me cycle through my multiple TiVos by putting a button on the widget itself, rather than having to flip the thing over and change the prefs.

I like the double-click change to 2.5, and the download progress in the widget itself is OK, but I prefer the real-time progress of the browser download without having the widgets up, and I would like to be able to download without decoding. I prefer quicker downloads that I can batch decode later with another utility. For now, I'll stay with the previous version, which, IMHO, is almost perfect.

I'm having some trouble viewing the listing. It looks like the dashboard is too short vertically and I need to resize it but when I try to drag the bottom right corner nothing happens.

When I click the "i" to show the widget prefs, the window expands for the prefs and I can see all my shows for a short moment before the widget flips to show the prefs.

Is there a way to manually edit the plist file to make the window longer veritcally? Can you think of a reason it wouldn't resize?

Great Widget. This was working for me great under Snow Leopard, but after a software update (not to Lion, but one of the pre-Lion updates) it stopped working. No shows appear. I tried Hide/Unhide folders. Is this problem "software update" related? A bit of a bigger challenge, can "flagged" content be downloaded (i.e. HBO shows?)
