| Description: | Although Apple's World Clock is really beautiful, I'm not a fan of analog clocks. So I made this. Features: - display different time zones (by GMT offset) - select 12 or 24 hour display - very low processor usage Time zone selection is done by GMT offset. It handles a handful of DST rules. The DST functionality has been adapted from Offworld Time, a Konfabulator widget. Thanks to loki der quaeler for his work. |

I have been waiting for this one... good on size too!

Very nicely done. I particularly like that it uses approx .5 per cent of CPU, unlike World Clock's 10+ per cent.

Yes. I was hoping someone would come up with this.
It would be nice if it knew what time zone major cities are in.

Nice job. I'd suggest you add Zulu Time (aka UTC and GMT). Also, although it's pretty easy to open the package and customize this widget, it would be nice to be able to add locations thru the interface.

Yeah, this widget is completely ignorant of GMT for two reasons.
1. I'm still working on a back-face design that allows for GMT offset timezones and keeps it small.
2. I haven't found a nice way to do the calculations in javascript.
I think I can handle #1, but if anyone reading this knows a good way to handle #2 cleanly (including different rules for DST), please email me. A neatly-packaged class would be great. If I don't find anything soon, I'll probably try to steal the code from Apple's World Clock, but that code is a little tricky as well.

Does this clock deal with daylight savings time correctly, especially in cities or states that don't recognize DST or in countries in the Southern hemisphere, where their DST is the opposite of that in the Northern Hemisphere?
In the US, Indiana and Arizona can also present some pretty tough problems for DST, since both have areas that do and do not recognize DST. Indiana actually deals with DST three different ways.
I routinely deal with people in different parts of the world and use Apple's World Clock widget to check the time, before dialing the phone. Incorrect handling of DST in the Southern hemisphere could mean the difference in calling someone at 8:00am or 6:00am.
I don't have the time to test this widget for every time zone in the world. Has this widget taken all of the different DST zones into effect? If so, it should get 5 stars. If not, it should only get 1 star.

You can rate it one star if you care to, but the widget is COMPLETELY igonorant of DST. If the timezone you're in uses DST and so does the timezone you're tracking, then it's fine. Other wise, you'll have to change the time twice a year. The real pain of it isn't that some states do an some states don't it's that the rules vary between US, Europe and Australia as well. If you can find me a package that'll do it, lemme know. My only options at the moment are apple's package or a clock from Konfabulator. But both of them have a somewhat complicated network of functions. So it'll take some time yet.

I should correct that, if both your present time zone and the tracked timezone use the same DST rules, you're fine. Otherwise, who knows.
Actually, if anyone could even just find me a definitive work on DST rules for different countries, that would be a great step in the right direction.

Good news! It does DST (at least for North American and European rules). Yay!

http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com is a pretty definative source for dst info. maybe that would help with dst support for the southern hemisphere?

Southern hemisphere DST would be much appreciated.

I think there's been a mistake. This clock wasn't written by me. My clock is at http://www.matschaffer.com/home/projects.php.
This clock appears to be written by someone from www.drunkenhalo.com. Possibly Robert Sanders who is listed as the owner of the host name.

The problem has been fixed.

I didn't write this clock. Mine was just a hacked version of apple's (and this site wouldn't accept it for that reason). Mine is at http://www.drunkenhalo.com/DigitalWorldClock/

Would be nice with a 24h option.
