Date & Time - iCal Events
Comments
This would be a very useful widget if you could simply have it show all of your calendars in one copy. Other wise, it's completely useless. Sorry.

i concur. No one opens iCal and views individual calendars. We view all at once. It's a great ideal, just needs that tweak. Thanks.
Posted by: angelos on May 23, 05 (4:31 AM) for version 1.01 (previous version)
In fact, I have heard from many users who view only one calendar in iCal. Perhaps it's a Work vs. Home distinction, or something similar. But version 2.0 will allow you to view multiple calendars in one widget.

Ben,
You did a great job on the design of this widget. I love that it matches the calendar widget perfectly! Yes, it would be nice to be able to view more than one calendar at a time (I have 6 in iCal). Thank you for making this widget.

Another thing I think would be useful is the ability to set how many days ahead to display. I like a full weeks view myself, but as it stands right now it only show the current day.
Just my opinon.
Thanks though! for a 1.0, not bad.

Wonderful widget. I love it. I agree with the other repliers.
Also: A "To-Dos" would be great.
Posted by: gedfooked on May 23, 05 (11:47 AM) for version 1.01 (previous version)
This is the widget I've been waiting for and I too agree with the comments above.
BTW it has been very neatly designed!
And oh, it would be cool to have a button that launches iCal if the widget makes you want to change or look up something (I impulsively started to click an event to type some remarks into it...)

I love this thing! Thank you Ben, you added an essential item to the Dashboard that Apple probably forgot. Love the design too.
My only wish would be to be able to adjust the widget's height - I don't like scrolling around. But besides that, 5 stars!

Am I the only one the new 2.0 version isn't working for? The widget remains blank, and when I flip it over the calendar menu is empty and dead, and there's no button to flip it back over. Do I need to toss out a pref file somewhere or something?
Posted by: dcharti on May 24, 05 (8:19 PM) for version 2.0 (previous version)
No, you're not alone...We are 2 !!!
This is my favourite widget, so if I could make it work I would be so happy :-((
I've tried to install it in my user library as well as in the system library without success. Trashed the pref file and it's not working at all.

When I use this it doesn't show the events that are happening today, which I found puzzling. It is showing events in the future but I'm a pretty forgetful guy, so being able to see who I have to call to explain why I forgot their birthday would be extremely helpful.

No-one agrees that an iCal launch button would be a good idea?
I mean, it's also amazing to me that there's no address book launching button in Apple's address book widget.
And no iTunes launching button in Apple's iTunes widget.
Especially when i look at these widgets, i often feel like launching the programs for making changes etc.
Posted by: Doxxic on May 25, 05 (10:08 AM) for version 2.01 (previous version)
The empty space next to the widget name looks like it's just *made* for an iCal launching button...
Already the best widget of them all, btw.
Posted by: Doxxic on May 25, 05 (10:09 AM) for version 2.01 (previous version)

Very very nice work. I'm really surprised apple didn't do it themselves, but you may have done it better.
The address book does have a "launch addressbook" button (the red one).
Including something similar in this widget could be nice. It doesn't take much space or cause confusion, but provides functionality for those of us curious enough to look for it.

I'm glad you like the widget! I'm excited to report that version 2.1 (coming out Monday) will be resizable and offer some other handy features.
Regarding events today: iCal Events currently shows only upcoming events (events that haven't started yet). A future version will be more clear about this and give you the option to show all events happening today, not just upcoming events.
Stay on the lookout for new releases!

lordryan,
Could you email me (kazezb [at sign] carleton [dot] edu) with information about the kinds of events it's not showing up? For example, are they all from one calendar? I'm concerned that the widget isn't working for you.
Regarding today's events: There is a bug where the widget doesn't display today's all-day events. But other events that haven't started yet should be showing up. Is it this distinction -- between upcoming events and all events -- that is confusing? A future version may offer a choice between "Include all events from today" and "Show upcoming events."
The problem with all-day events will be fixed soon.

I gave this widget only 4 stars in "design" beacuse i found a lil bug:
If i don´t have any upcoming tasks during the next days the widget will use some localized text like "Keine Ereignisse heute oder in den nächsten Tagen" meaning "no upcoming task today or next days" - the problem is, the widget does´nt display the german special-character "ä" but displays a questionmark instead ... this is just a minor flaw but since perfection is crucial on the dashboard ... besides that - big up!

It's working OK for me with 10.4.1 and v2.1 of the widget. However, for Ben's information I'll point out that scroll-wheel support is not working correctly for me. Scrolling goes in the wrong direction when it moves at all. If I keep scrolling the scroll wheel the widget will sometimes scroll to the end and "bounce" back to the middle. I'm using a Wacom wireless scrollwheel mouse.

I'm not sure what's going on, but I've had problems starting with a previous version, 2.0.2 and continuing in 2.1.1. It will only show events from my "Work" calendar. When I flip it over to the back, the popup menu for the number of days is dimmed out and empty. Only my Work calendar is shown in the list, even though I have several. And the Done button doesn't work. The only way to get back to the front is to refresh (command-R).
My console log shows the following:
(event handler):Undefined value
2005-06-18 19:54:08.009 DashboardClient[8046] (com.benkazez.widget.icalevents) undefined: Undefined value (line: 0)
[8046] file:///Users/username/Library/Widgets/iCal%20Events.wdgt/iCalEvents.html:TypeError - Undefined value
I've tried deleting the preferences, restarting, etc. The first time this happened it went back to normal after a while, but now it's been this way for over a week.
Well, strangely enough I've managed to solve it finally, as I write this. I opened iCal, turned off the birthday calendar, and relaunched Dashboard (with killall Dock in the Terminal). (This finally got the iCal Todo widget working for me too.) I turned the birthday calendar back on, relaunched again, and it's still working, so that may not have had anything to do with it. I'm going to leave this comment anyway in case it's helpful to the developer or anyone else with this problem.
One little complaint about the new version: the minimum width is now wider than the weather, iTunes, and iCal Todo widgets. It was great to have things lined up nicely.
Otherwise, it's better than ever! Great job. This is absolutely the best third-party widget I've come across.

One of the best widgets by far, this stays permanently open on my Dashboard.

First, thank you for a great widget.
Second, I like the color and the design, but why is the widget's border thick at the top and bottom? I know you have "iCal Events" and the "i" at the top, as well as the "Location: xxxx" and the resize at the bottom, but there is a todo widget that looks fine without the super-bold border. Could you give me an option of a smaller border?
Third, could there be an option to turn the year display off? The thing shows events by days anyway - at least for me, the year reading is not necessary (who gets confused by year intervals?).
Fourth, I really admire the functionality. Well done! I've got my times, my calendar colors, my info. I'd actually not want major change in function - leave the app stuff to iCal, and let this be an indicator widget of sorts. Or at least, leave that as an option if you do add (extra) functionality to this.
thanks

I absolutely love this one and I can't imagine how my dashboard would be without it!
Thumbs up for the quick bugfix for daylight savings time. I just hated to see my most useful widget crash as soon as october 29th came into view.
Looking forward to the birthday calendar integration!

Love it. One suggestion: can you put the current date in the top red border between the widgets name and the "i"?

Earlier versions did not work for me. This one does. Thanks for persevering. Excellent utility. I'd love to see it incorporate the calendar widgets functions so I could just have one of these on my dashboard. Also, it doesn't seem to refresh the iCal data when I cmd-R the widget. Is there another way to refresh that data?

Cmd-R will refresh the widget, but iCal may not yet have written its changes to disk. The failsafe way to update the widget is to quit iCal after making changes.

This widget has only gotten better and better and with birthdays added in, it is now officially INDISPENSABLE. Brilliant work, thanks Ben!

When a repeating event is clicked on in the calender, it goes to the first time of that event, instead of the one in the day you click, or sometimes goes to 'ghost events' that aren't there.
I also found a really strange bug- I moved an event from one day in the week to another later. Events shows the event as on its original day unless I have I have it look at enough days that it sees its new day, in which case it is fine.

Would it be possible to adapt the design to Apple´s new Calendar Widget?

I second the motion to change the graphics to match the new, and GREATLY improved, Apple Calendar widget. I think this would look awesome on my dashboard.
On the whole, this widget has been fantastic to use, and I haven't had a single problem, I can't say that for many other widgets.
This is one of the most useful widgets in my entire collection.

This is what I call a true calendar widget. Much better than the Apple one.
Except, you can beat the Apple one in one more area - color choice. It'd be great to be able to choose more colors, especially calmer ones like brown or grey or the colors of the weather widgets and such.
As it is, I have kicked this widget off Dashboard temporarily, just because its redness got to me.

Hi everyone,
I'm really busy right now, but I'm definitely planning on adding color choices in the future.

hey, just a heads up that Leopard breaks this widget...
if the developer decides to update it, a choice of theme would also be a big bonus

One of the most useful widget out there, unfortunately it's BROKEN in LEOPARD. Hope to see a fix soon. I love this widget.

Odd, I'm running Leopard and have no problems with this widget, aside from an odd looking "Done" button. If you visit the developer's support page you'll see he's working on an update for full compatibility.
