Fun & Games - Wimic

Description: This is almost as much of an attempt to see what I could do without having to write a Cocoa plugin as anything else. Be proud of me. I had some help from Daniel of http://idleware.com with the graphics. Just to give you a hint of what this has, it contains a few of my favorite comics: Adam@Home, Dilbert, Foxtrot, Get Fuzzy, and Penny Arcade.

The main interface has a calendar and a drop-down list. Future dates are grayed out, and dates older than a month are sort of grayed out, since they're not necessarily gone (but the usually are). Using the left and right arrow keys move a day back and forward respectively. Double-clicking on the comic will take you to that comic's main site or can be directed to a date specific page (as Penny Arcade is).

Using the up and down arrow keys will traverse the list of comics.

In the preference options, there are two important fields: URL and Source. They both accept date modifiers (I decided to go with Smarty's at http://smarty.php.net/manual/en/language.modifier.date.format.php). Also, adding + or - to the end of any date modifier will move the day on that specific modifier forward or back relative to the selected date. All dates will get set to GMT -5 regardless of location.

Many of the comics appear hidden. Feel free to unhide the ones that you are interested in. And don't worry, any updates made will not override your changes.

I've created an advanced plugin architecture that will allow users to write/add their own plugins separate from the .wdgt file. I'm in the middle of writing documentation for this, but if you'd like to try it anyway, please email/IM me.

An excellent widget! I hope you continue adding more comics to this so that we can have one widget installed for anything we like.

Boy on a Stick and Slither (www.boasas.com) is my comic request. Thanks!

I like this widget a lotsmiley
Great idea, great work, useful date selection option but the design isn't that good. :S
Try to remove unnecessary space from the comic selection and the date selection. It would be nice to also have a year selection!
Can I request Calvin & Hobes ( www.ucomics.com/calvinandhobbes ) for the next update?
Thank you, keep up the good worksmiley [[[[]]]]]

As an FYI, I'm working on support for out-of-date comics, such as Calvin & Hobbes, especially since that particular comic is one of my favorites.

PLEASE make the widget collapsable. I would love to just have a tiny speech bubble that I could click on to expand it to show the day's comic, as Dashboard screen real estate is dropping everday. The interface is otherwise very nice. Also, it seems that it reloads the comic every time I switch to the Dashboard. If it could remember the last image it would be terrific.

Hi, since updating from the version online on the 28th May, the plugin refuses to work.

It says "Meanwhile in today's Comic", but the calender doesn't show the days, and the part, where I should be able to choose the comic isn't here, apart from the top part of the speech-bubble.

Before updating it worked (it refused to work, as soon as the update was online)

apart from that, it was wonderful

Re: A few of the gripes.

I do plan to make the collapsed version of the widget even smaller, but I don't plan to do much on the expanded design. With most comics, the date and comic selection are less than 10% of the overall width. If this is a SERIOUS problem, we can work something out.

I plan on giving the user more options when it comes to how it expands and collapses.

I've been able to implement every request so far (around 5 of them at this point) including getting Calvin and Hobbes to work pretty transparently despite the big time difference.

Just so that it's said, please use this page for feedback and PM/E-Mail/IM me regarding requests and bugs.

Great, nothing like getting abstract, negative ratings posted on my comments, just after my request for bugs not to be posted here, because of a French localized error that I would have been glad to help fix.

Fun.

Posted by: pottedmeat (developer) on Jun 03, 05 (6:18 PM) for version 1.65 (previous version)

Uh oh, latest version breaks nearly everything. The new widget size is kind of nice, but the number of comics has suddenly shrunk to just 4, the calendar is completely off (day of month starts on wrong day of the week) and none of the preferences appear when trying to add comics...

Posted by: kineel on Jun 04, 05 (8:20 AM) for version 1.67 (previous version)

Hi pottedmeat,
I don't seem to get the widget to do anything.? It just refuses to load?
I love the idea though!
When I install the latest version should I drag the old one out or should I just allow the new version to 'replace' the old one?
Ignore the critics who offer no support. They just like to see themselves in post.

Posted by: philk on Jun 04, 05 (9:09 AM) for version 1.67 (previous version)

Daniel's graphics are very ugly, why don't you do the graphics by someone else?

(very nice animation though smiley )

How can I fix any of these problems if you never get in touch with me?

Posted by: pottedmeat (developer) on Jun 04, 05 (2:20 PM) for version 1.67 (previous version)

pottedmeat,

I don't think it's a matter of getting in touch. If you use the 1.67 version you will notice that the file with the Cartoon's listed in it only has four cartoons now. Seriously, if you are actually using your own widget I think you would see the problems right away.

Posted by: kineel on Jun 04, 05 (6:48 PM) for version 1.67 (previous version)

It completely is a matter of getting in touch. The two bugs that I just fixed were ones that I couldn't reproduce on either of my Macs, or on my testers' Macs, even after clearing all preferences.

The people that helped me only had to spend 5-10 minutes with me for us to work out the problem.

And of course I use my own Widget! I wrote it for myself.

Posted by: pottedmeat (developer) on Jun 04, 05 (11:47 PM) for version 1.68 (previous version)

Its very nice... I'd like to see a way to import/export lists of comics and maybe a page with definitions so that everyone doesn't have to reinvent the wheel when they want to add User Friendly, and Penny Arcade.

A

Posted by: adsmart on Jun 06, 05 (9:12 PM) for version 1.68 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

Uhhm, A, the list of definitions is in the descriptive paragraph on this page. If you can't implement it with date fields, then I don't want it to be implemented by users. The plugins that I've written aren't simple, they're pretty involved and require a knowledge of the code.

I'm glad to add any comics that anyone requests and I'd like to keep it like this. No one has to reinvent the wheel when the wheelmaker is glad to make any sort of wheel they'd like. Since, apparently, no one wants to talk to me (with the exception of 1 or 2 people) I might make the program notify me every time someone adds (or tries to add) a comic.

Posted by: pottedmeat (developer) on Jun 06, 05 (9:59 PM) for version 1.68 (previous version)

I agree with one of your posters...this is the widget I've been waiting for! I figured out the way to add some of my favorites by hand (Rose Is Rose, Monty, Rhymes With Orange, Sally Forth, Funky Winkerbean, Luann), but I can't seem to find Opus or old editions of Bloom County. Any ideas on that count? I've found a site that posts them <http://www.cartoonistgroup.com/properties/opus/search.php#second>, but I can't get to the comics to add them to the widget.

Thanks for your hard work. I really appreciate it!

I downloaded this widget three times and each time it wouldn't work. I was very frustrated. I LOVE comics.

Yesterday I thought bugger it i'll give it another go and downloaded and installed it again.

Bigo, this is now one of the best widgets ever, and unfortunately it has in one fell swoop made four other widgets redundant. Sorry guys. This is the ONLY comic viewer you will ever need.

I would like to see the interface take on a bit of colour, say in the Nitrozac style crossed with traditional widget stylee, (are widgets old enough to have a tradition?), but thats personal preference.

Thank you Pottedmeat.

Posted by: macnewbie on Jun 30, 05 (1:12 AM) for version 2.01 (current version)   View Detailed Rating

There should be a way for it to find the largest image on a page and display that. That would remove the need for the complicated date links, and would enable support for comics whose URL's don't have the dates in them, like diesel sweeties, which I would like to see support for.

Posted by: zweben on Jun 30, 05 (3:38 AM) for version 2.01 (current version)   View Detailed Rating

Also, the checkboxes on the back should be replaced with actual buttons, since they act like buttons.

Posted by: zweben on Jun 30, 05 (3:39 AM) for version 2.01 (current version)

Just wondering, while the functionality of this widget is fantastic, are there any plans to perhaps revamp its UI? Was thinking a more Aqua feel and look would better suit its place on a Dashboard screen.

Posted by: weisheng on Jul 01, 05 (12:16 AM) for version 2.01 (current version)

zweben: This is what the plugins are for. There is always a way to associate a comic with a date. Questionable content is number-based, but still date-related. The update I'm working on should make this very easy. And once I get the plugin API up, anyone can do it. They should be replaced with buttons...

weisheng: Oh, but if I was a graphic designer.

Posted by: pottedmeat (developer) on Jul 02, 05 (10:03 PM) for version 2.01 (current version)

Thanks so much for the update to this widget. I love that I can add my favorite comics to this myself!

One thing for the Feature Wish List though- is there any way there can be a next/previous button that would just jump to the next known day there was a comic? The clicking of each day of the month per comic makes it a bit less user-friendly (and makes it less stealthy for me to check my comics at work!).

Love this widget though!

Posted by: weisheng on Jul 10, 05 (1:42 PM) for version 2.01 (current version)

I really like this widget a lot.

But could you maybe make it less noisy on the console (maybe using a an alias "debug" calling alert() so that you can easily comment it out for releases).

Also, it seems to get confused easily when changing comics while it is loading one (i.e. displaying the wrong picture for the current selection.)

And if it could remember if it was minimized and start up as the small speech bubble, that would also be great.

Apart from that, it's pretty much perfect!

Posted by: gck on Jul 20, 05 (3:05 PM) for version 2.01 (current version)   View Detailed Rating

pottedmeat: The left and right arrow buttons have always cycled through the months on the calendar for me, not taken me to the previous or next comic.

If those buttons are supposed to be cycling through the comics then that is a bug in the version I have.

I really love this widget. I would love to see VGCats (www.vgcats.com), 8-bit theater (www.nuklearpower.com), and Real Life (www.reallifecomics.com) added. I've tried added VGCats myself but it keeps coming up as the comic not able to be found despite me having the correct stuff in the field.

I take that back, I got VGCats and 8-bit to add. Thing is, some comics only update once or twice a week and Wimic shows the "can't find the comic" panel. Is there perhaps anyway for it to check for the most recent comic or image file that conforms to the timestamp code stuff?

Great widget. Worked right away with a lot of available comics.

I'm looking forward to the documentation for the plugin so I can get Sluggy Freelance working fully (regular sluggy have 'a' extension, Bikini Suicide Frisbee Days have 'f' and Z-Com have 'z'. It looks like there may be a mechanism to failover to alternative naming to handle this, but for now I can read all the regular sluggy without a problem in wimic, very fast, very nice.

SchlockMercenary splits the multi-pane days with 'a', 'b', 'c' ... Not sure if any mechanism exists in wimic for that though, may have to use the click through to the page for that.

Again, very nice Widget.

Thanks pottedmeat.

Posted by: MikeGA on Aug 06, 05 (11:25 AM) for version 2.01 (current version)   View Detailed Rating

I'm going to address a few things, since I've not responded in a bit.

1. I plan on keeping the graphics the same they are now, I like them.
2. The left and right buttons, on the keyboard, move to the previous and next comic.
3. Joy of Tech is included in this widget. Just unhide it.
4. The next version I'm working on is big. The way that the comics are loaded is completely different, and will fix almost every single weird thing this widget tends to do. Localization is already completed. I'm working on the ability to resize the widget, minimize in place, numerically editioned comics WITHOUT plugin (or, at the very least, only needing a regular expression), the comic failed to load should never happen, the widget will grey out days in which the comic doesn't come out, comics that are back in time won't have greyed out dates anymore, time zone will no longer be shifted. There's some more stuff as well, but it's what I can remember at the moment.

Hi Pottedmeat!

Wondreful job!

One question and one correction.

The correction is that the comic you called "Herd Thinners" Is actually called "Kevin & Kell"

The question is: Does Wemic saves the comics on disk? I haven't been able to find its cache anywhere... If it does not is pretty impressive, but I would like if you could add this functionality...

Thanks!

A fabulously useful widget. Thank you so much for your investment of time, energy and creativity. Suggestions:
-In your instructions, put yourself in the position of a Mac user who does not write code, and for whom the interface needs to be completely intuitive.
-In setting the comics I wanted, I found myself going through the entire list one by one, checking or unchecking the Hidden box. This meant clicking on the comic list balloon (nicely done graphic) each time to bring the list back. It would be better if the list could stay open so I didn't have to reopen it after each change (or did I miss something in its operation?)
I thought that checking Add New Comic and typing in its URL and Source in the appropriate dialogs would get me Cats With Hands, but all I get is The Comic Is Hiding. How can I add it, or would you, please. Thanks again.

One of the best widgets which graces my Dashboard! AMAZING job!

One minor bug though. Adding an ampersand to the "Author" field in a new comic kicks you out of the editing mode. For example, I was trying to add the comic "Shoe" and the authors are Cassat & Brookins.

Otherwise, great widget!

http://images.ucomics.com/comics/ca/2005/ca051129.gif
it works fine for the one date but never updates.

Thanks!

I just wanted to say that I love this widget!

A comic I would like to see added is HalfLife Comic.
http://www.hlcomic.com

I tried adding it myself, but failed.

Also wanted to let you know that Penny Arcade and CTRL+ALT+DEL is not working. Penny Arcade is one of my favorites. Thanks for your help.

I installed wimic a few days ago and added Calvin and Hobbes. Yesterday C&H disappeared and I cannot get it to reappear, even after using the urls provided above that had worked before. I hope someone has a solution to this, I really enjoyed C&H on the Dashboard...!
Thanks.

Hey all! Sorry to be taking forever on this latest update.

I've just set up a website, and I'll be writing an entry tomorrow on what's happening with the update. Thanks everyone for your great feedback!

This is a great widget, but it does one major bug that I've found, and one minor little design flaw. The design issue is that the link/button that takes you to this page is a checkbox listed among the preferences - kind of odd, but as I said minor.
The major problem I've found is that cartoons will often not load, especially those from older dates. This seems to happen most often when I haven't looked at wimic in a couple days. I'll open it, and today's comic will load for the selected feature, but if I click on an older date, the comment at the lower left changes to make it seem like it's loading, but the comic doesn't change. However, if I leave it on the older date and then switch to another comic, that comic will load ok (but going back to the first doesn't fix that one). The only thing I've found that fixes this is to close wimic and reopen it.
If this bug could be fixed, then I'd give it 5 stars.

We need an easy way to add numbered comics. You know, comics which is not date based, but just a number that increases for each one.

I love it.

What's the secret to adding a new comic? I'm trying to add one and I can't figure the URLs.

Step 1: find the comic I like on ucomics.com
Step 2: ???

This is really a brilliant widget. However, ucomics recently changed to gocomics and the comic is in a flash. It's not displaying in Wimic any longer, any way of fixing this? I miss my daily comics...

Great widget, Tundra just redid their site and I can't seem to add the new URL. Any suggestions?

Hi! Can you please add "This Modern World" by Tom Tomorrow?

http://dir.salon.com/topics/tom_tomorrow/index.html

That would be so awesome!

It doesn't look like this widget is maintained anymore, so for anyone else who's noticed layout issues since upgrading to Leopard, here's my quick fix: http://bwah.org/article/WimicFixedforLeopard

(Warning: backwards compatibility with Tiger is untested.)

Better yet, get it here.

I've posted a version which includes compatability with both Leopard and Tiger. There is more to fixing Leopard than just the CSS although that is part of the issue.
