System Utilities - Trash

Description: This widget will display the number of items currently in your trash as well as the number of megabytes of space that they take up. It also lets you empty the trash.
Author: maxintosh
Version: 1.8
New in v1.8: Fixed bug that would stop widget execution if there were too many items in the trash (or, more specifically, the combined length of their names was too long)

I'd love to see it display the size of the files in the trash too.

it would be really cool if it showed what was in the trash. That would make it very useful.

Good start! Keep developping it!

Hmm... I just found a bug that makes it only display up to 164 items... odd...

well, I figured out how to make it safely empty the trash, so expect a new version in the near future. Possibly tonight, or maybe tomorrow.

Thank you so much!!! this is one of the few useful widgets out there, and i highly recommend. but it would be nice if it showed the number of things in the trash and the amount of space it took up in the same place, for this is supposed to make my job easy (of emptying the trash) so it might as well not make me click on it to get info. however, this is probably very picky of me, and is not necessary.

The thing is, I am trying to keep it fairly small, yet still have the numbers big enough to be easily readable without having to actually stare at the widget. I don't want to make the numbers much smaller than this, and I don't want to make the widget much bigger than this. In the next version I might make a reverse side that allows you to choose whether you have to click on it, whether the widget gets bigger, or if the text gets smaller.

Really useful now that it shows the capacity in the trash AND can be emptied.

Maxintosh: You're right, the other trash widget (Junk Meter) IS very similar to yours...

Thank you everybody for the positive feedback!

The next version will include a slide out panel that shows what is in the trash, and lets you delete specific items. It may take a while until it's done though because I have final exams, two completely new widgets in the works, and two websites.

Very nice widget. It does seem like it could be a little bit smaller (there's a big margin around the text) but it's not bad the way it is. The only thing I've noticed is that it seems to only check the trash folder for the main drive. I deleted a bunch of files off of an external FireWire drive, and it had no effect on the file count in your widget. Other than that little bug, very useful, and much easier than going into the Trash and doing a Get Info on everything.

you know what would be really cool? if it showed the amount of trash inside the can, like one piece of crumpled paper for one item, two for two, and so on. maybe not a hundred pieces of paper, though. smiley

Modcaveman I see wot you mean perhaps it could be done in perecentages ?

Also I think the trash can to empty could be put a bit further along perhaps for more space or just to make it look good ! It just feels in the wrong place for me !

GREAT WIDGET !

when there is trash, the stats overlap the button for emptying the trash.

Posted by: modcaveman on Jun 07, 05 (5:49 AM) for version 1.7 (previous version)

The stats are further along to the right on my widget than in the picture above (i.e. there is not much gap between stats and the 'empty' button')...is it just me?

Posted by: missjunelai on Jun 07, 05 (9:21 AM) for version 1.7 (previous version)

I've seen that happen on someone else's computer, too... also, I've just been alerted to a potential problem with Amnesty. Looks like I need to make v1.8... sorry, I was a little rushed in beta testing this one because I only had about an hour to do the whole update. v1.8 should be ready soon, once I figure out what's wrong.

can there also be a percentage of how much of your hardrive it takes up?

Posted by: modcaveman on Jun 08, 05 (2:55 AM) for version 1.71 (previous version)

I'll consider it, but I really don't want to clutter the widget. I'll see if I can make it work for the next version though.

i liked the older empty trash button. and why's the icon tilted?

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

I have been complaining about the lack of a proper Trash Can message ever since the first beta of OS X.

Thank you for creating this widget.

Although the widget is free, I will send a donation to the Katrina Relief fund for this wonderful thing.
