This is probably one of the few useful widgets out there! It's nothing fancy, but very simple.

Could you add a "check" button which opens gmail in a browser?

Posted by: AutumnFire on May 31, 05 (3:40 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

Thank you, so, so much.

could you also make it in black? (for mesmiley )

AutumnFire, click on the front of the widget and it should open the atomfeed of your gmail account which will show you your unread messages. I will be adding a preference to toggle between that behavior and opening your gmail account proper. Rik, as for different colors, I am working on it. Should be ready in a couple of days.

very nice.

looking forward to different colour buts it's a lovely little widget.

I'd love for it to log me into my google account instead of the RSS feed when I double click on it. Or at least give me the choice. Otherwise, it's perfect.

Posted by: darkstream on Jun 02, 05 (4:40 AM) for version 1.1 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

Downloaded the latest version. I like the colors option, and the options as well. Now all it has to do is log me into my account the way Stats for Adsense does and I would never need another widget! LOL

Posted by: darkstream on Jun 02, 05 (4:45 AM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

darkstream, its a preference on the back. change from 'feed' to 'gmail'. It won't authenticate for you though. There are some security issues surrounding that.

Posted by: holetse (developer) on Jun 02, 05 (4:45 AM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

So I have gotten the security issues resolved with autologin to gmail and the feed (thanks darkstream and angus) and I should be releasing a version that implements this feature later today or early tomorrow.

Posted by: holetse (developer) on Jun 02, 05 (6:35 AM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

Maybe if you could insert a check button? It does not update on my desktop and that is what I am using it for.

Posted by: bighoss99 on Jun 02, 05 (7:03 AM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

So there seems to be a bug in the updating. If google resets the connection durring the request (seems to be happening alot today) it seems to screw the widget up (sometimes). Actually, being reset also seems to mess up Safari's RSS feed. So it may be a problem on apple's end. Nevertheless I am looking into it. There may be a way to trap the error. If anyone has any ideas they would be much appriciated. In the mean time you can reload the widget using cmd-R and that should fix it. Failing that you can close and reopen the widget to restart updating.

Posted by: holetse (developer) on Jun 02, 05 (9:00 AM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

A "check gmail" button would be good so the widget can get the number and display it. Also maybe a feature wher you can set the intervals of time to auto update on the preferences side of the widget

this is a good widget, but there's one problem.... it doesn't update!!!!!!!!!!! even when i do cmd r, it does the fancy swirl thing and says zero new messages. just to make sure, i check my inbox and there's FIVE new messages!!! This is a bug you should probably fix, unless i'm the only one with this problem. the previous GotmailG worked fine on my computer, though.

Posted by: modcaveman on Jun 03, 05 (9:43 AM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

hrm... can you check the console to see if gotmailg is rasing any errors? I have a new version almost done (should be out tomorrow) that has a completely rewritten communications routines, and they are much more robust. But I am still concerned about this bug. I am unable to reproduce this problem reliably. I have only seen it twice on my machine. Also, have you tried closing and reopening the widget as a work around for now?

Posted by: holetse (developer) on Jun 03, 05 (11:28 AM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

oh, the old version is still avalible at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=140144

Posted by: holetse (developer) on Jun 03, 05 (11:37 AM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

thanks! i changed it back to feed, and now it's working

Posted by: modcaveman on Jun 04, 05 (11:33 AM) for version 1.2 (previous version)

Much Better babbe

Posted by: bighoss99 on Jun 05, 05 (3:21 AM) for version 1.2 (previous version)

i don't think this widget actually... works.

Posted by: slytusk on Jun 05, 05 (7:00 AM) for version 1.2 (previous version)

what seems to be the problem slytusk? when you say it doesnt work... is it giving an error? or what? Also, are you using version 1.2? Because version 1.1 doesn't work.

Posted by: holetse (developer) on Jun 06, 05 (1:55 AM) for version 1.2 (previous version)

This is an excellent Widget - one last request would make it perfect. Add an option to launch Mail so if you are using POP options. But thanks much for this damn near perfect Widget - it's replaced several other Gmail checkers I tried and used.

Thanks for the idea saintstryfe, look for it in the next version.

Posted by: holetse (developer) on Jun 10, 05 (2:32 AM) for version 1.2 (previous version)

Finally, this works as expected. This is a useful widget that lets me view all of my gmail accounts at once, and cuts down on login time.

LOVE IT!

Wow, over 1000 downloads. Thanks everyone. If you have any problems with it please let me know.

oh, and I forgot to mention in the discription:

<b>NOTE:</b> The preference file has changed location in version 1.3. The old file at
~/Library/Preferances/widget-com.eah.widget.gotMailG.plist is no longer used and
should be deleted.

Posted by: holetse (developer) on Jun 13, 05 (1:01 AM) for version 1.3 (previous version)

yes! it works perfectly now! great widget.

Posted by: modcaveman on Jun 13, 05 (10:37 AM) for version 1.3 (previous version)

Not sure what's happened, been using it for the last few days perfectly (to check multiple accounts even) - and then this evening it can no longer check my mail. Everything is a red circle with an X. (I can still click the widget to log myself in though)

Suggestions:
Add a few more colors perhaps? (White/grey grey would be nice to have available)
Change the icon to something a little more inline with the widget - the non-serifed white font you use would be much better then the red on blue you're using at the moment.

Posted by: Anselan on Jun 21, 05 (1:06 PM) for version 1.3 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

Have been using this verry good widget for a couple of days but now it has stopped working (same problem as user Anselan describes).

Posted by: Cloaken on Jun 21, 05 (3:01 PM) for version 1.3 (previous version)

Not working for me now, either...

Posted by: missjunelai on Jun 21, 05 (10:49 PM) for version 1.3 (previous version)

Agree with Anselan, the icon needs some improvement. Hasn't been working for me in recent days either, may be due to a change at Gmail's end. The address has changed from https://gmail.google.com/gmail to https://mail.google.com/mail, don't know if that has any significance. Anyway, thanks for the effort, great widget!

Posted by: weisheng on Jun 22, 05 (5:19 PM) for version 1.3 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

After changing the js file in the widget to reflect the new address change from gmail this widget is now working correctly. Thanks weisheng

Hi! I'm using this but can't seem to get it to count my emails, either. I can click on it and it will connect to Gmail, but there's either a white dash or red X with a circle around it. Any tips? Thanks!

Posted by: rlowe82 on Jun 23, 05 (2:37 AM) for version 1.3 (previous version)

Not working for me lately either so I tried what scotanderson78 suggested and replaced the URL wherever it appeared in the js file but now I just get an underscore instead of a red cross/circle...

I've loved this widget so I hope we get a fix soonsmiley

Posted by: luxe on Jun 23, 05 (5:09 AM) for version 1.3 (previous version)

scratch that. I hadn't replaced the last 'gmail' in the url.

it works like a dream again when replacing the URL smiley

Posted by: luxe on Jun 23, 05 (5:12 AM) for version 1.3 (previous version)

Sorry guys... I'm having the same problem with the red circle and the X and would like to use the remedy stated by luxe but what is the js file? Thanks

Posted by: hasnul8286 on Jun 23, 05 (7:59 AM) for version 1.3 (previous version)

Ctrl-click on the .wdgt file and select "Show package contents" the JS is right there.

Posted by: Anselan on Jun 23, 05 (11:41 AM) for version 1.3 (previous version)

Thank you very much Anselan! Now it works!!! smiley

Sorry guys, I was out of town on a backpacking trip. Seems liek google has changed its URLs up on us, look for an update tomorrow.

Posted by: holetse (developer) on Jun 24, 05 (9:42 AM) for version 1.3 (previous version)

I am wondering what people think of the art for the widget. I agree about the icon and banner, and they will be fixed for the next update. But I am currious about opinons of the main graphic. Is it too bold, too bright, not interesting, not polished enough? I have someone (I am not a graphic designer in any sense of the words) who is interested in making some new skins and I want to know what people think of the current ones. Would anyone miss the current front images if they disappeared? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Posted by: holetse (developer) on Jun 28, 05 (1:34 AM) for version 1.4 (previous version)

Well, it's not particularly interesting - but it's incredibly functional.

Is there a compelling reason to drop the current skins once you have more added?

Posted by: Anselan on Jul 14, 05 (5:55 AM) for version 1.5 (previous version)

Re: Anselan
Not really. In fact, I am currently working on the new version that will feature both the old design and the new one. The new version should be done in a couple of days. Glad you find the old design funtional. That was the point.

Posted by: holetse (developer) on Jul 15, 05 (10:42 PM) for version 1.5 (previous version)

It has come to my attention that password containing @ and : do not work with gotMailG. I will have a fix out as soon as possible. Probably later today.

Posted by: holetse (developer) on Jul 19, 05 (6:59 PM) for version 1.5 (previous version)

Actually, its just the @ symbol that can't be used.

Posted by: holetse (developer) on Jul 19, 05 (7:18 PM) for version 1.5 (previous version)

I think this is very functional, but it cannot just replace the Gpeek widget, it it does everything, shows the amount of mesages... like you do, then it shows who its from, and even a little from the message! awesome! i recomend it to all you gmail users! its resizeable, and even turns out smaller then this widget! a must get!

Posted by: BoxBoy on Aug 07, 05 (7:23 PM) for version 2.0 (current version)

Hmm, interesting.

The latest version doesn't seem to work properly anymore. I get the message on the gmail page "these characters are not allow: control-v"

Interesting considering 1.5 was working up to the mnute I downloaded this.
