Multimedia - QuickTime Full Screen

Description: A very simple widget (my first) that will put whatever the currently playing QuickTime movie is into Full Screen mode, even if you don't have QuickTime Pro. Still a beta version, so let me know of any issues and I'll try to fix them.
Author: maxthomas
Version: 1.0
New in v1.0: To appease both fans of the simplicity of the widget, and people who wanted the ability to open movies, I've added Drag and Drop support to the widget. Visually, this version looks identical to the last one. However, if you drag any quicktime file onto it, it will open and play the movie full screen.

Cool idea! Great for people without Pro. Too bad I already have Quicktime Pro, so its pointless for me......

I have to admit that it's a genius idea!
Even though i have pro this is one of the greatest widget ever, too bad there is only 5 star for the rating because i would rate that one 10 stars!

I have pro so I don't need this but still its great idea and great widget. I just got to give you 5 stars!

Absolutely fantastic, that's a great idea, actually the best one I've seen around for a widget!

Excellent idea, but on my machine it tooks annoying amounts of clicking before the widget actually reacted.

hmm, i didn't have that issue. i'll see if i can work that out.

Congrats to the author on making what I consider to be the first TRULY useful widget to show up for Dashboard. This adds functionality that doesn't otherwise exist in the OS elsewhere (unless you have QT Pro), or can be found through a browser. This is what widgets should be about IMHO. Excellent work!!

The only thing I'd like to see added to this is a way to have an open dialog accessed from the widget that will let you open a movie file. Otherwise, it's great!

I like it that way, please, keep it that way. This widget is not supposed to take the functionality of QuickTime, so no, I don't want to open a movie, I want it to be SIMPLE, just the way it is right now. Dev (maxthomas), you have my support and my vote!

One of few widgets that actually changes how I use my computer. I used all three versions and love the improvements. I like the new ability to drag and drop files or click the play button. Very stylish looking as well. The only thing is, not sure if you know, that after playing in full screen and finishing the movie, if you try to play it normal sized the movie does not play, but the audio does. A small bug, since playing it full screen fixes that.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. This is a really great community. DJP3221, I did know about that bug. I've tried a couple of things, and so far I haven't been able to fix it, but I'll keep trying.

Thanks again,
Max

Why just don't crack QT Pro?

Posted by: Lundmark on Jun 05, 05 (2:24 AM) for version 1.0 (current version)

That's illegal. This isn't, as far as I know.

Cool. I did a widget just like this a few months ago that can be found in the vanillasoap.com widget pack. Glad to see this uses original code though smiley There seems to be a lot of people releasing widgets that are just rips of someone else's work.

I assure you that I was unaware of your widget. Everyone's been complaining about the lack of Full Screen support in the QuickTime player since QT7 came out, and it's been mentioned a couple of times how to put QT into full screen over on the MacNN forums. I was planning to just make a quick widget for my own use, because I wanted to try my hand at making widgets (I just got Tiger 5 days ago), but I figured I might as well post it here.

Oh no, I didn't think you were copying. In fact, I made my full screen quicktime one because of a post at MacNN too smiley

Sorry, but I have to tell you that this widget is not fully functional (and in that way does not help people who don't have Pro). Why not?

Well...the full-screen works perfect on .mov files. As soon as I open up .mpg files (that I have on my HDD) and use this widget, sound continues but video freezes. As soon as I leave the widget, video jumps to the right place (where the audio is currently at in the timeline).

Btw: Nice to hear about vanillasoap stuff.

I'm sorry that it doesn't work with MPEG files, but I don't have the MPEG2 plugin, so I can't test it.

Like I said before, it was just made as a quick introduction to widget programming, and to possibly help some people who need a workaround to this limitation in the free QuickTime Player. I'm sorry that it doesn't work the way you want. I can try to find a way to fix it, but, like i said, I don't have the MPEG2 plugin so it'll be hard for me to test.

This works great for me! Simple and to the point, great work!

Ok. So it doesn't play MPG's. I had to knock it down a couple of points on functionality. But, it's great on design and creativity.

As for the MPG's, I think that I'll import them into iMovie and save them as a .MOV file. I haven't tried it, yet. But, I think that should work, until a version comes out that works with MPG's.

With MPG support, this widget would rank right up there with the elite, such as Package Tracker, Stock Tracker, the Cartman enabled Hula Girl and of course, my own Wham-Bam-Tram Ram Counter. ... Ok. So I'm prejudiced. smiley

Great widget. I look forward to an MPG enabled version.

Fantastic stuff. Nothing more to say at the moment.

Nice widget, just a little request:

I think that the widget is a tad too big. There really is no need for the the size to be any bigger than it needs to be. It would be good around the size of the just the button you press to get it to full screen.

If you have Quicksilver installed you can bind a shortcut to an applescript. I use Command+F to invoke the fullscreen mode script. You can find the script at http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/mac911/2005/08/fullscreen/index.php. It works great!

Look at the pictures below to see exactly what I've done.
