Well done! but the flip-animation could use some work.

it needs more Macs!

Great widget

OK, we need iBook (clamshell) as well as every other computer (post 1998). Also multiple angles would be nice for each category (might require two pop-down menus - one for computer second for angle).

Posted by: MacCrazy on Jun 12, 05 (12:25 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

Image quality sucks.
Besides that, it's OK.

Posted by: ZicklePop on Jun 12, 05 (2:17 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

My suggestions:

Improve the graphics, get better quality images and work on the transparency. Some of them (like the eMac and PowerMac G4) are lacking in this area.

Like Kenai said, add more models, like iPods and the old iMacs and iBooks.

Like MacCrazy said, get more 3D-like images with better angles.

Add drop shadows to the images.

Can you please make one of the G4 Tower with mirrored doors? please please please?

Working on all of this as we speak. Thanks so much for the suggestions. I should have an update by tommorow.

Posted by: emblym (developer) on Jun 12, 05 (6:45 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

Hmmm, the apple II appears to really be an Apple I.
Anyways, thanks for the update, this is a sweet widget.

"- Added all iMac G3s"

ummm except all the Fruit colored iMacs which I consider the most recognizable iMacs.

Add these and others (Dark Age Comps?, Beige G3?)

Posted by: xlax999999 on Jun 12, 05 (6:01 PM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

Pretty cool, but on some Macs the info button gets pushed way to the corner, away from the picture. If you could add the fruit colored iMacs with a front view, that would be great.

I will do my best do add some others. If any of you could point me in the right direction of some of the Macs you want to be in the widget please email me a link of some usable images (icons, wallpapers, etc.)and I will be more than happy to include them. As for as the "i" button goes, I'm almost positve that it is in a static position. Also I am very sorry for the Apple II mishap. I feel pretty retarded. But then again this is my first widget so I guess I have some room for error. Thanks again for all of your guys comments. An update will come shortly, depending on when some images come my way.

Posted by: emblym (developer) on Jun 12, 05 (9:52 PM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

Thanks for adding those pictures. http://www.apple-history.com/ is a good resource for images.

Posted by: MacCrazy on Jun 12, 05 (10:51 PM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

A great improvement, but some of the images could still use some polishing. The edges on a few of them are gritty and rough.

And I actually liked the default menu image from the first version better than this bumped out brushed metal one.

Lol, I wish. Hehe.

Posted by: SiliconX on Jun 13, 05 (3:55 AM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

i like it! but, it gets tricky to flip to the backside when you're viewing the computers, since the "i" button is way off in the middle of no where. and with the ibooks, can you add a top view or something like that, since i like how round they are. and with the iMac G5, can you add a sideview?

Posted by: modcaveman on Jun 14, 05 (6:26 PM) for version 1.2 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

I agree with modcaveman about the position of the info button, its what I meant to say before. Since some of the pictures are a lot smaller, the i button stays in the same place, but can be far away from the current picture. I think you should try to make two scroll bars: one for the computer, and another for multiple angles (if any). It gets hard to scroll thru all images sometimes. Nice update.

Posted by: DJP3221 on Jun 14, 05 (7:59 PM) for version 1.2 (previous version)

oh, and can there be side views of the iMac G3s?

Posted by: modcaveman on Jun 14, 05 (9:31 PM) for version 1.2 (previous version)

As you can see here I am currently pursuing a designer to create a whole set of images for the widget. Right now all the images are from a slew of designers and I want them all to have the same feel. At the same time I am working to develop a setup to select from different views and so forth. Thank you all for your patience and extremley helpful comments. Anything you guys can do to further speed up the process would be great. Please email me for any information that could help.

I forgot to mention that I already have a working idea to fix the info button location problem.

A great decoration for any dashboard

You've gotta make the info button easier to see.

Posted by: pm (Administrator) on Sep 15, 05 (11:16 AM) for version 2.0 (previous version)

Its in the top left hand corner of every widget. How much easier could it be?

Posted by: emblym (developer) on Sep 15, 05 (12:54 PM) for version 2.0 (previous version)

It could be white!

Nice design. Maybe add the ability to drag an image onto the computer screen and have it show up?

Posted by: jtbandes on Sep 15, 05 (3:36 PM) for version 2.0 (previous version)

You have to increment the version number for the system to process an update.

"Its in the top left hand corner of every widget. How much easier could it be?"

First off, it is traditionally in the bottom right corner of every widget, this one is different. But that's not really my point. My point is that when showing some Macs (like the iMac G3), the Info icon is not on the image at all. It appears over the darkened dashboard layer and is very difficult to see. Making it white would improve its visibility.

Powermac G4 Quicksilver please

Fixing the update. Sorry.

Posted by: emblym (developer) on Sep 15, 05 (11:24 PM) for version 2.0 (previous version)

While the while may work better for some things, it's impossible to see on the iMac G5.

Posted by: EricNau on Sep 16, 05 (12:12 AM) for version 2.01 (previous version)

He indeed has a point there. What about making the Info icon change colors based on the computer selected?

Posted by: pm (Administrator) on Sep 16, 05 (12:15 AM) for version 2.01 (previous version)

Also impossible to see on the eMac.

Posted by: jtbandes on Sep 16, 05 (1:42 AM) for version 2.01 (previous version)

Well do my knowledge its not possible to change the color of the icon throughout the widget. I understand what you guys are saying but you have to remember that the 'i' is in the same spot everytime. Top left hand corner. I'm open to any suggestions. If any one can help I'm all ears.

Posted by: emblym (developer) on Sep 16, 05 (1:47 AM) for version 2.01 (previous version)

I don't see why not. All you have to do is this:

document.getElementById("flip").background= "url(file:///System/Library/WidgetResources/ibutton/white_i.png) no-repeat top left" ;

Posted by: pm (Administrator) on Sep 16, 05 (2:18 AM) for version 2.01 (previous version)

I think you mis undertood the question.
What I was meaning was that I don't think it is possible to have the 'i' white for some images and black for other.

Posted by: emblym (developer) on Sep 16, 05 (4:51 AM) for version 2.01 (previous version)

When you change images, run the code I posted in my comment. Make it white_i.png or black_i.png depending on which widget you're switching to.

Posted by: pm (Administrator) on Sep 16, 05 (11:22 AM) for version 2.01 (previous version)

Make it so you can drop your own picture into the computer screens, or just show the current desktop picture there

Posted by: Jacobwil on Sep 16, 05 (4:57 PM) for version 2.02 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

To Jacobwil. I have been looking into that but I'm stuck at the point of aspect ratio and adjusting to it. Some screens have widescreens (Cinema Displays, PowerBooks, iMacs) and some have standard displays. I'm not sure on how to crop the images ot audjust the picture ratio. I'm looking into it though.

Posted by: emblym (developer) on Sep 16, 05 (7:34 PM) for version 2.02 (previous version)

To grab the current size of the monitor its in JS - screen.width and screen.height and this will grab on all screens. Just do something like screen.width - 100

Posted by: Powermacguy on Sep 17, 05 (4:07 AM) for version 2.02 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

They're talking about the screen on the computer pictured in the widget, not the computer running the widget.

Posted by: pm (Administrator) on Sep 17, 05 (4:24 AM) for version 2.02 (previous version)

While it does nothing, this still is a pretty good widget. I have to give it 2 stars for functionality, but the design and creativity get a 4. Not bad.

Posted by: skyhawkrider on Oct 04, 05 (1:21 PM) for version 2.1 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

If forgot to give you some suggestions; stupid me...

1. I realize this wouldn't be a very easy task, but I would alphabetize the order; I find it annoying to go looking around for the one I want sometimes.

2. Add Studio Display, and the older PowerBook G4 (titanium).

Posted by: skyhawkrider on Oct 04, 05 (1:24 PM) for version 2.1 (previous version)

Thanks for your comments.

1. I actually thought about doing this. I didn't know if it should go by catigories or not. I will get some more input and decide later. I will most likely move towards that though.

2. I have had a couple request for that. I'm not sure visual if you will be able to tell or not, but I will see what I can do.

Now there's a yellow blob around it!

Posted by: IanTheMacFan on Oct 14, 05 (3:40 PM) for version 2.2 (previous version)

No there isnt? Can you explain yourself please?

Posted by: emblym (developer) on Oct 14, 05 (8:59 PM) for version 2.2 (previous version)

I don't see a yellow blob anywhere...

Posted by: SiliconX on Oct 14, 05 (11:30 PM) for version 2.2 (previous version)

This may be an obscure request, but do you think you could add a Newton MP2K/2K1 and/or eMate 300 to the collection? I'd really like to have a MP2100 icon, but if I'm the only one asking, don't bother.

Zander

I just added the eMate. I was unable to find any usable images for the MP2100. If you find anything email it to me.

Posted by: emblym (developer) on Oct 15, 05 (7:42 AM) for version 2.2 (previous version)

Nice widget.

Could you move the info button to the lower-right corner? Apple's guidelines state that it should be there, not in a different corner.

Posted by: bkazez on Oct 17, 05 (3:24 PM) for version 2.3 (current version)   View Detailed Rating

The CFBundleVersion property in Info.plist is listed as 2.1 rather than 2.3.

It would be really cool if you used XMLHttpRequest to fetch the list of product names and image URLs from a server, so that you can always keep the widget up to date with recent products.

Hey, neat widget! Could I request the following:

PowerBook G3 Lombard
PowerBook Titanium
MacBook Pro
Mac 128 (the original!)

Thx, and well done!
