Wow. Great concept. I look forward to seeing a more polished version soon. The i button *will* work if no data can be found. Otherwise, refreshing the widget will do the trick.

It gives me the place of the lowest gas prices, but no pricing. Only Questions marks.

Posted by: Blacklx on Jun 15, 05 (6:17 AM) for version 1.0pr (previous version)

Ya kknow what, I was actually thinking of making a widget that shows you nearby gas prices myself yesterday smiley

Posted by: Kjartan on Jun 15, 05 (7:59 AM) for version 1.0pr (previous version)

I e-mailed you a screen shot.

Strange, Whatever Zip I put in wont work either. Great widget though! Might need a color option in it.

One more thing I noticed, Once the Zip is inputed...I can go back and chage it, it won't let me. The "i" won't work.

One of the most useful widgets (in concept) yet! Very good idea/work.

Thanks for implementing my idea smiley. This is a great site and with some work this will be a great widget.

Just think - this widget could save mac users millions in petrol! That will show them windows userssmileysmiley Nice widget, but I'm best off going to Costco Gasoline since they're always the cheapest. smiley

This is a good widget, although I guess data is limited by availability of spotters. Couple comments:

1) Slight drawing problem with 1.0-- the bottom border of the window is not being respected and text/picts are continuing a little below it (if, say, there are 3 or more results). Also, with the curved corner, the pict of the 3rd item is also off the horizontal boundary of the window.

2) Scroll bar does not work with mouse scroll wheel; this seems to be a common problem with many widgets, but appears to be fixible based on updates of some of those widgets.

3) In the general interest of keeping widget size as small as possible (to allow to jam as many as possible onto a screen), you _might_ consider putting the preferences (zip code, etc.) on the flip side and making picts/icons smaller. I guess the first is a design decision, based on whether you think users will need frequent access to this, or will for the most part put in one set of preferences and stick with it for a while (I'm in the second camp).

Keep up the good work.

This widget definitely shows promise, but i agree with all of the stuff widgetuser said. except i don't have a scroll wheel mouse.

I get N/A for all the pricing?

Strange, other than that works perfect!

Posted by: Blacklx on Jun 17, 05 (6:20 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

If you get N/A for everything, that means there are no spotters in your area. Maybe I'll add another reference website (if there is another one).

I'll try to include scroll wheel support, as long as hitting return to submit the form. Also, a "last updated" box that appears when you mouseover.

Thanks for downloading!

Try GasBuddy.com

Posted by: xlax999999 on Jun 17, 05 (5:07 PM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

The problem with gas buddy is that it branches off into other websites, making it hard to get the data by just entering your zip code.

Posted by: andrethegiant (developer) on Jun 21, 05 (12:34 AM) for version 1.0 (previous version)

I was excited about this concept, however, my big beef, is that it is ALWAYS going to show those noname gas stations and Arco, which I don't like to get gas from.
It would be great if a user could select a gas station in prefs , say Costco, Chevron, Shell, Volero, 76, etc, and find the lowest price among those stations in the area.
Thanks for your efforts, though. This has lots of potential.

Posted by: RaiderDude on Jun 24, 05 (6:33 PM) for version 1.0 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

I love the concept, but the pricing in my area was inaccurate. I suggest that the date the most recent price was submitted be included in the display so one can tell how recent the price was spotted.

Again, love the concept and design, but not useful if you drive over to the station and the price is $.32 higher than referenced in the widget.

That's what happened to me. smiley

Love to see enhancements. I've already sent this to a few friends. Waiting eagerly for future versions.

Posted by: alset on Jun 28, 05 (2:36 AM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

Great start, and a very valuable idea. A few suggestions:
- I'd like to enter multiple zipcodes, so I can search for stations within two miles of my commute route.
- Most people consistently buy a certain grade, so please let me make the widget narrow by displaying only the one I care about.
- Finally, the showstopper: I've got old data (strangely, for only some grades) in my area. I need to be able to exclude prices over e.g. two days old on a station/grade level.

Posted by: phobia on Jun 29, 05 (8:37 PM) for version 1.1 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

Hey guys...a few responses here from a co-developer:

1. Multiple zip codes - The implementation of that particular approach to the problem would be inefficient and a mess to code. See number 2 for a solution...

2. The next version will be very compact. It will show only the chosen grade with its price along with the icon and address of the #1 best hit. (You will have the ability to cycle through the top 10 using keyboard or mouse...) With a small individualized widget, you can easily have 2 or 3 open at once, solving problem (1).

3. Yeah...we didn't include the date data in the previous version. The next one will have the option for color coded numbers to indicate how recent the prices are.

4. The ability to specify a list of choice stations is an interesting one, and I have a fairly clever and simple way to implement it. If the other developer likes the idea I see no reason why it couldn't be added in the next version.

5. The next version will automatically update daily with the settings specified on the back, out of the way. (With a nice little animation, too.)

5. Graphics. They're gonna be sweet. But just be sure I get approval from all, please check out http://www.interdimensionmedia.com/images/gas.jpg and let me know if you see problems with the new design. Thanks!

Posted by: esqwuared on Jul 01, 05 (4:21 AM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

It's a fantastic concept. And Last Updated for prices was a much needed and appreciated addition. But I'm still getting several big errors in my locality (Los Angeles). (Drove 8 extra miles to save big bucks only to find that the actual price was 41 cents (!!!) higher than the widget's displayed price - and this price was displayed as having been updated only the day before.) Not sure how these errors can be spotted or managed. I'm guessing that whoever reported it made a mistake....

I'm sorry if I am missing something, but I downloaded 1.1 and I don't see the indicator of the date of last update for the prices. Where is that located?

Posted by: widgetdude on Jul 08, 05 (3:58 PM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

It is located on the mouseover text. Simply hold your mouse over the price to see it.

ust wanted to let you knwo that the Aple widget site has the old version listed and the wrong developer!!

Nice job - just registered to be a spotter, too. Don't want to be a one way user!

IMPORTANT NOTE FROM THE DEVELOPER: Gas 1.1 no longer works because gaspricewatch.com updated their design. An update to fix this major problem will be released ASAP.

Posted by: andrethegiant (developer) on Jul 18, 05 (8:40 PM) for version 1.1 (previous version)

I see from the post here that Gas 1.1 stopped working four days ago (as of this writing). I'm glad I finally found this forum to find out that it's not my computer or something I'm doing wrong!

In regard to esqwared's post of June 30, I do like the new design for the widget. Less clutter. Should keep the resources use down too, I hope.

I second the motion of RaiderDude: the ability to weed-out stations we refuse to go to for one reason or another would be very helpful.

I also like the idea from phobia of being able to exclude old prices.

I've been a spotter for GasPriceWatch for quite a few months now so it's nice to see the fruits of my efforts in Gas 1.1. Thanks and keep up the great work!

RELEASE UPDATE: I know everyone has been eagerly awaiting the next version, since the previous one no longer functions. Good news - the finishing touches are in the works, so check back in the next few days. The wait will be well worth it.

Just a friendly note from a co-developer (That's me over there at apple.com, billd222. Not the wrong guy.)

Yes! This design is 10x better! You pulled through quite nicely!

This is excellent... Extremely well done. I'm not in love with the color scheme; the color of dials clashes with the background color a bit in my opinion. That's a fairly minor complaint though, and it's the only one I've got!

Hmm, one little bug to report actually. With the following settings:
Zip: 62864
Within 15 miles
Sort by Regular
48 hours old (or anything less)

The display is coming up as:
There are no
202 North Ave
Ina, IL
2.15 9/10

I can click the little areas to go left and right between stations even though there is only one. If I switch it to 10 miles I get the correct "there are no stations reported in this area" message, though the arrows still show the strange behavior.

Again, great job otherwise!

Nice widget. Could you add a link to www.gaspricewatch.com on the back. I wanted to see the web site this was getting it's info from, and ended up having to look through the code to find it.
Other then that, great widget.

I'm running 10.4.2 on a g5 dual 2. Internet over AX

Any ideas?

This widget is great, and a thousand times better looking that 1.x. My only complaint is that when I cycle through the stations and if one of them is Shell, the numbers will not stop spinning even if I cycle to another one.

If this widget actually worked it'd be great.

I've been monitoring a particular gas station for over a month that's 15 miles out of my way. Finally decided to go and get gas there since prices are so high. This widget had gas listed at $1.97 per gallon - which of course i thought was ridiculously low, even for central florida, but it was worth a shot if it was true. When i got to the station is was $1.57 - this widget doesn't work.

Posted by: RazerRaY on Aug 15, 05 (4:55 PM) for version 2.11 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

As a matter of fact, RazerRaY, it does work. Gas gets its prices from a user submission system at gaspricewatch.com, as it says many times above. The price was just outdated, and it notifies you when it was last updated both visually and literally. You should be thrilled that the gas was 40 cents lower than you expected. You shouldn't mark off design and creativity just because it "doesn't work". Please get your facts straight before you rate.

Scratch that last comment (itchy trigger finger).

The widget was working great until I wanted to change my zip code.

It won't show results for the modified zip, even if I remove it from my dashboard, and place it again. Any idea what's wrong?

Posted by: SierraMist on Aug 19, 05 (11:24 PM) for version 2.11 (previous version)

SierraMist: I'm just guessing, but perhaps there are no stations with updated prices in the new zip code you're entering?

Test this by signing up as a "spotter" at http://www.gaspricewatch.com (where the Gas widget gets its data) and update your local station's price. Then check to see if the widget displays the price.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Posted by: DrakenSAAB on Aug 22, 05 (5:11 AM) for version 2.11 (previous version)

A note from the developer:

Unexpectedly, the widget no longer returns results for arbitrary radii. Instead, results are only provided for a search radius of 1,2,3,5,8, or 15. We will release a fix for this problem, but in the meantime please circumvent it by selecting one of the above listed options.

Sorry for the trouble. Be on the lookout for a new version!

This is a great idea - would love to have an Aussie version of this.

Looking at these prices though, I feel so ripped off! I don't know what you Americans are talking about when you talk about how 'expensive' fuel is. What you pay per gallon is the same, and sometimes even less than what we pay per litre!
