i don't get why people care about this kind of stuff... i'm amazed by the number of counter widgets.

The number of people who want to track Firefox's progress may indeed be small --- particularly among Mac users, who already have a very nice browser in Safari. I see Firefox as important primarily because it is bringing standards back to the web.

Dashboard is a very personal thing, though, and everyone will find their own favorite dozen or so out of the hundreds available. Relatively few widgets enjoy the near-universal appeal of, say, Apple's own weather or dictionary widgets. But it's cool to have widgets available to cater to special interests, too.

That said, I suspect we see a lot of counter widgets because they are very easy to write --- making them good "first widgets" for developers wanting to try their hand at Dashboard.
