References - CharacterPal

Description: CharacterPal is a widget that helps you remember how to type any special character. Just put your mouse over a character, and the key combo appears at the bottom. Now you don't have to remember what Option + Shift + K does.

Awsome! This will come in handy; I always have to keep tring combinations until I find the one I want, but no more.

Great job! Stylish, yet minimal too.

You might consider adding a feature to copy a clicked-on character to the clipboard for easy pasting into any application.

Brilliant! I've been so frustrated that Apple didn't such a feature in the new "Special Characters" palette. I've wanted something like this for quite some time. Thanks!

I'm working on a function that copies a clicked character to the clipboard. Actually, the widget's already set up to do it. All I need to do is get a script that actually puts it in the clipboard.

This will prove to be a very useful widget for me. No more fiddling with multiple keys while trying to remember key combos! Being able to copy the characters to the clipboard would be even better. Thanks for the effort!

Great! This is an excellent example of making info that previously required searching quick and accessible. Will facilitate some symbols, plain and simple.

Good widget idea. I have a feature request for the next version: Have it display the HTML codes as well.

While it is a very nice widget, it has one problem that will make me not to use it: International support. It is working fine with a US keyboard layout but shortcuts are actually different for other keyboard localization. For example on an irish/uk laptop keyboard, alt-3 will be # and not £ (which you get with shift-3). I guess I could try to mofify it to suit my keyboard layout smiley
I second other users who requested being able to copy a character to the clipboard.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I'll start working on a new version as soon as I finish some other projects I've got going right now.

Is http://developer.apple.com/documentation/AppleApplications/Conceptual/SafariJSProgTopics/Tasks/CopyAndPaste.html what you are after?

I tired that. I think those are more event handlers than actually putting something in the clipboard. I think I'm going to need a shell script of some kind.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

nice widget, but no international support jet, which would be highly appreciated.

I like the idea, but I am not able to make use of it yet. The Keyboard Viewer (previously KeyCaps) and the Character Palette, both of which are available via the Mac OS menu bar cover not only these symbols, but (in the latter case) others that cannot be created with combinations. Both also support all currently installed type faces. Character Palette even has name-search capabilities (entering "suit" will return 9 results, 8 of which are the suits of cards).

Still, I think there is great promise here, especially if you can tap the Font Book.

This new version is fantastic looking and quite useful!

I think you can safely stop now, since it's reached perfection

This widget would be great for web coding if you could copy the character's code into the clipboard clicked on. Instead of trying to remember … we could just click on the character, exit the dashboard, and paste into our editor. Let us choose between … or … forms as well.

Really excellent widget. I hope you keep working on it.

Cany anyone tell me why it needs an internet connection, please? Doesn't seem like it should be asking for one.

Posted by: redrocklobster on Dec 03, 05 (8:29 AM) for version 2.01 (current version)

CharacterPal requires an internet connection to check for updates, but otherwise, it should work without one. Is this what you're talking about?

If not, send us an email at admin@tacowidgets.com.

U.S. keyboard layout is the only supported so far, and I use the quite different French one. Could the next version bring support for other international layouts? Hopefully...
