Application Interfaces - Symphonic

Description: This is the missing link between the iTunes controller widgets and bliss. Keep iTunes hidden and quickly play the song you want. It's faster than using iTunes, Spotlight, or Quicksilver. It's the most handy thing ever. Instant play. It's not a ubiquitous search widget, it doesn't kick you out of Dashboard, it just plays the song you want and it's almost never wrong. Interested?

There are many things that you just can't do with other iTunes controllers. With Symphonic, there are many ways to search, and even more commands that will give you the control you need from iTunes quickly. Right from Dashboard.

Please look at the help file on our website (http://www.mindquirk.com/widgets/symphonic/help.htm) as there are many hidden features that you will miss unless you read it.

Excellent widget. Does pretty much what I've wanted for some time.

Questions:

Is it possible to attach a hotkey to it? For example, say I press Command-Option-Control-s, I can then type the song I'm after.

Can you make it show the options available when there is more than possibility for what track the user has picked. To be honest this one probably isn't all that important.

Could you set so that depending on how you enter the song, it plays it in different locations? FOr example push enter to play it in the library, Command-enter plays it next in Party Shuffle, and Command-Option-enter adds it to the end of Party shuffle.
Or, come to think of it, if the widget just detects where you are currently playing music from and picks appropriately:
If I'm listening to the Library, play from the Library
If I'm listening from a playlist, play in that playlist if it exists there, if not choose Library
If I'm listening to Party Shuffle, make it the next in the queue.

Cheers!

Absolute genius... thanks for a great widget!

Brilliant! This widget is excellent as a launcher- now I don't have to open iTunes just to find a song I want. It's replaced my iTunes widget- Thanks!

Great widget! I keep forgetting to type "by". I keep expecting to just type in "home michael" for Michael Bublé's "Home", and nothing turns up. But then i remember "home by michael" and it works.

Great job! Like the 1st suggestion on here, prioritize which ever item is open (playlist/library/party).

Great work!

You don't really need to type "home by michael", you could try typing just "home" or maybe just "michael". Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

Absolutely brilliant widget. It really solves the problem of finding the song you want without drudging up the whole iTunes window as gracefully as you can imagine.

By the way, there is a small bug. If the search terms contain an apostrophe, the widget fails to find the song and instead displays the message "Undefined". Unfortunately, I have two songs by the same artist that can only be differentiated by the word that contains an apostrophe. Just a heads up for any future revisions you might chose to make.

Great, but not faster than Quicksilver. It takes longer for the Dashboard to pop up than it does for me to pinpoint a song or song-in-playlist with QS. smiley

Nice widget! I find that I use it most often when I want to listen to a specific song -- just one song. I've noticed that iTunes keeps playing after Symphonic searches and plays a song. I'd like an option for it to play the song that u search for but then stop after the song is done playing.

I am sorry this does not work well for me because I do not really use my "iTunes music folder" at all.. iTunes knows where my music is stored.. (on many different disks) but this widget does not. I am not sure if anything can be done about this, but I must agree that if I did keep all my music in one folder (some are .aif files etc, I am an audio engineer) then this is a great tool and I would give it 5 stars.

(I did rate it, I do not meet the minium requirement for this software : That the user keeps all their music in the one place Apple made for it.)

typo.. (I did -not- rate it.. it deserves 5 stars IMO, I wish I could use it... I use iTunes to audition mixes that I am working on as well as just as a radio, so many files I have in my iTunes playllists are stored with projects that are gigabytes in size . It is not practical to copy all that to the iTunes music folder ) Also I have 2 computers and iTunes can play files over the network and I do.. So some of my iTunes playlists are not even on the host machine...)

Using 'by' is annoying, as others have already hinted at. It also doesn't support party shuffle. Ideally it would realise I'm listening to my party shuffle and play it next in the shuffle instead.

You should considering making play in party shuffle the default since party shuffle is basically designed for uses like this.

Posted by: Nate on Jul 19, 05 (4:19 PM) for version 1.0 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

You don't have to use by, but you can if you want. The only time you would need to use it is when you want to differentiate between two songs with the same name. Just typing "homes" will match the song "Homesick", for example.

I'll try to add party shuffle features.

The double post there was definitely not my fault. Um... yeah...

Excellent work. Very handy widget.

A few possible suggestions...

-Maybe a small bar underneath the search bar that displays the song/artist currently playing in iTunes. (maybe include an option to toggle this on and off to save space)

-An option to either play now, or add to a playlist. Add to a playlist mode could function almost like a jukebox, allowing you to build all the songs you want to hear straight from your dashboard. (and since the playlist would just be for songs added from Symphonic, you wouldn't have to worry about managing multiple lists - just have one called "Symphonic" that is always used by your widget)

Posted by: klink on Jul 20, 05 (2:06 PM) for version 1.0 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

sorry to post again... but if you wanted to, you can also make Symphonic a playlist constructor as well. I know this would expand a bit on its original purpose, but there's no way to build playlists in this fashion in iTunes. If you know the songs you want to hear, you can just go into Symphonic and type them in to create a playlist that you can either listen to immediately, or name and save to play later. could be some interesting possibilities.

Nice very cool .. could you ever integrate a itunes remote with everything in this too?

Posted by: Powermacguy on Jul 20, 05 (10:46 PM) for version 1.01 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

does what it's supposed to. however, there still is this annoying css problem where the song title goes off the widget.

Posted by: dontcarez111 on Jul 21, 05 (1:17 AM) for version 1.01 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

I wonder if it would be possible for it to only search in the current playlist. I typically play my music from a smart playlist that only lets a song play once every seven days so I don't hear a song too often, but when I sue this widget it takes me to my main library.

Not rating, since I haven't used it (I don't have Tiger, and I'm not paying for Amnesty), but I thoroughly approve, and I'm sure that once I do get Tiger, this is one widget I'll be using constantly; I only hope that by the time I do its functionality is extended.

I do think that placing a song *next* in Party Shuffle is a more sensible behaviour than placing it at the end, and indeed I think there should at least be an option to have that as default behaviour whether Party Shuffle is active or not - I know I'd prefer it that way.

The ideas about having its functionality extended into a compact iTunes info viewer via a drawer or similar, and even allowing some kind of basic playlist creation, are genius, and I'd love to see those if at all feasible. Then, it would truly be an incredible widget.

Posted by: cnet128 on Jul 22, 05 (4:51 PM) for version 1.01 (previous version)

Oh, and one other thing: perhaps there should be an option to enable an alternative to the 'by' that everyone seems to detest so; perhaps have it user-defined, or set it to something simple like the tilde...

Posted by: cnet128 on Jul 22, 05 (4:54 PM) for version 1.01 (previous version)

Very nice widget!

But it needs an option to select the right track in situations where multiple tracks are found!

Posted by: Da_Vinci on Jul 24, 05 (5:51 PM) for version 1.01 (previous version)

My biggest complaint was said already. I'm going to also ask you to make the chosen song appear after the currently playing song when in Party Shuffle instead of at the end of the shuffle list. Or at least make it an option. Otherwise a fantastic widget!

Posted by: Cruzn15 on Jul 25, 05 (6:07 PM) for version 1.01 (previous version)   View Detailed Rating

Excellent widget. Unfortunately, it still lacks the "Play next in Party Shuffle" option and only dumps the song at the end of the entire Shuffle list.

it's not opening or anything-just showing the yellow bar with no text input or anything, and won't flip over. what am i doing wrong?

Way to think outside the box. This is a wonderful solution to iTunes controllers that took forever to respond.

It would be nice to see the focus return to the search box after entering something though. Especially for quickly adding a number of items to a party shuffle.

Awesome but I'd like it to be able to play in the currently playing playing playlist or you choose a default it look in first or something. great idea

I love the fact that it's yellow. The link for the manual appears to be broken though, and it's not linked off the main mindquirk page.

This is a great widget. I don't even keep it in the dashboard. Just a quick Terminal Command and I dragged it onto my desktop. Works great for me, but I would love to see it find the song in the playlist I am listening to. Also, as others ave said, the manual link is broken.
